Grey Tags // A Side Serving of Hiatus – The Outstanding Blogger Award

My brain is not functioning today but that doesn’t matter because . . .

It’s been a while since I was tagged in an award so thank you so much to Abi @ The Knights Who Say Book for tagging me in this one!

This post is coming to you a day later than my recent usual 1 post a week schedule because I have so much on my plate right now that I am ending every day with serious burn out. Genuinely don’t understand how I’m functioning at all right now, thankfully I wrote up most of this post last week!

The Questions

What book should have a fancy illustrated edition?

โ€œI wouldnโ€™t be the girl I am without you.โ€
โ€œYou wonโ€™t be a girl for much longer,โ€ came his low voice.

Sawkill Girls is such a descriptive and captivating book that I can imagine an illustrated edition being so beautiful and creepy as hell!

I would love visually seeing the different forms the Collector takes!

It would just be such a gorgeously grotesque book!

If you got to blurb your favorite book, what would your quote be?

Here have a few;

Taylor Jenkins Reid painted a haunting picture of a woman who doesnโ€™t exist and made her more real than almost anyone I know.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

I am in awe of Summersโ€™s both logical and emotional intellect. I just want to spend the rest of my life listening to what she has to say.

Sadie by Courtney Summers

Legrandโ€™s writing style is so beautifully fluid like water, easing you into the setting and before you know it, youโ€™re drowning.

Sawkill Girls by Claire Legrand

What book character would run a super popular tumblr and what would they post?

Sometimes I wondered if Isabel was all bandwidth and hot spots. The Internet, and the shenanigans that transpired within it, made her spark to life like nothing else. Her heart was her site, pulsing with life every time the comments section exploded after a good scoop. She came alive with the chaos. I think she loved it more than she loved the band itself.

This question is hard! The only character I can think of is Isabel from Kill The Boy Band. She already runs the most popular fan site for the band: The Ruperts, so I assume she’d either branch out or she started on Tumblr.

Reading that book truly threw me back into my One Direction days when I ran my own (unpopular) fangirl Tumblr before. I ended up leaving the fandom because things were getting too crazy and fans were crossing all sorts of lines.

It’s one of my favourite facts about myself to randomly drop on people because the reactions are always so funny, I guess because I don’t really talk about them now, it just shocks people as I’m seen as a very logical person and fangirl stigma is strong.

I’m not saying that fangirls are not logical, but there is that stigma. I’ve always been logical. I was logical then, I’m logical now and I still fangirl about stuff, I just no longer have one place to exert that energy, I spread that shit everywhere I go.

Whatโ€™s your favorite fairytale/story/legend to read retellings of?

I think I’m a sucker for a retelling because as a queer, fat, chronically ill woman, I love the idea of taking old tales that centre straight cis white men and making them more inclusive so that those who love the originals that don’t fit into that very small box can see themselves in the stories they love.

I have so many where do I even start?? These are more just specific retellings that I love, otherwise we’ll be here all day.

She refused to remain a victim.

I’m a sucker for a feminist retelling of Medusa. I really loved Cindy Pon’s Beautiful Venom from the Because You Love to Hate Me anthology.

Staying on Greek Mythology, I’m obsessed with Rachel Smythe’s Lore, Olympus, as many people are. It’s a fantastic retelling of Hades and Persephone with a bit of a modern twist and its so beautifully illustrated it makes my heart sing.

Like Tuck said: if we must lie to the world to be true to our hearts, then we would.

Robin Hood will always have a special place in my heart because my drama class in high school did our own retelling. We wrote the script and produced it ourselves and actually had it set at the local train station. Although I love our version, I’m head over heels in love with Elliot Wake’s Every Shade of Red from the All Out anthology. It’s a queer retelling and I’ll forever be screaming into the void for more.

I really love Shakespeare retellings. Shakespeare’s work has always been so daunting to me because reading it feels like reading another language (I struggle so much that the only semester of hs that I didn’t do drama was the Shakespeare semester).

But when it’s retold in a more modern way I always love it! I’m a huge fan of the 10 Things I Hate About You film, I even watched the show that lasted only a season in 2009.

My favourite movie for basically the entirety of high school was She’s the Man. I was a huge Amanda Bynes fan and I watched this movie so many times that I had to replace my DVD. I just love a good gender-bending story. Plus this movie gives us one of Channing Tatum’s best Himbo characters. I spent a lot of time watching old movies while I was stood down from work and She’s the Man aged remarkably well in comparison to the other ones I watched too.

Describe the last book you finished in AO3 tags style?

This is actually where I confess I never used AO3. I read fan fiction as a teen, I even wrote it and am thoroughly embarrassed by it but I did this all on Tumblr. So I don’t know the AO3 style of tags to be able to do this justice sorry!

What series should have spines that make an image when put together, and what image would it be?

Oh, I wouldn’t have a clue! This is a tough one. The only ones I can think of already have that I think? Maybe The Raven Cycle? They’re the only series I can think of that I’ve read that don’t already have that and might be a long enough series to be able to do something like that with and I suppose the only images truly fitting would be either a crow or Caebswater, perhaps with one of each of the main characters (though that would leave out Noah).

Do you associate certain songs with certain characters?

I don’t usuually get as specific as characters but I do usually associate songs with books I read. In fact I usually include a YT music video in my reviews with a song I think matches the feel or themes of the book I’m reviewing.

The first one I did this with was Consequences by Camila Cabello for Bad Romance.

However this isn’t the first time I’ve associated a song with a book. The first memory I have of doing that is This Is Gospel by Panic! At the Disco for the gang in Six of Crows. Something about that song just struck me as something they’d sing together while plastered in some pub.

Things for me are very full on at the moment.

I was going to finally do a wrap up post for the last few months next week but I just don’t have it in me right now so maybe I’ll do it next month?

I’m training in a new job, lost my other job, am applying for houses to move out on my own for the first time, I’m having to jump through hoops to get the help and support I need to do so, packing what I can, and soon will be looking for another job to replace the one I’ve been stood down from . . .again, so that money isn’t too tight when I move out.

Basically my entire life is up in the air right now and I feel like I’m juggling so many things and I’m very overwhelmed and burnt out. I’m really struggling and I have no idea how long I will be struggling like this for.

So, I’m not sure when I’ll be posting next, I hope I won’t be gone for long but I really don’t have any idea. I do want to try and find time to do some blog hopping though because I haven’t done that in so long and I miss reading other people’s content, so you might see me in your comments section!

No questions today. I’m too tired.
