I’ve got my hazelnut dark hot chocolate and I am ready to get rid of some books.
I should be writing reviews instead of typing up yet another one of these posts in advance and yet…
I’ll probably get to them when I’m at my aunt’s because it’s so relaxing there and I’m able to focus surprisingly well. Maybe I’ll take my laptop and my cousins to a cosy cafe or the library so I can get some work done and they can get some reading done in nice shared quiet.
Until then I’m going to keep putting it off because I don’t think I have the brain power to do any of the books in my review backlog justice.
Thankfully I’ve been reading books that I don’t normally write reviews for (history books, graphic novels) while I’m working all these extra hours because otherwise I would be even further behind.
Yesterday I finished four books! All while sitting at a desk waiting for the phone to ring and emails to come through or to show my boss how to use the copy machine I was introduced to only a week ago.
That’s enough of my boring day to day life, time to get to the books!

│The Diviners│The Diviners #1│Libba Bray│Stay│🌈☀️│
“Evangeline,” Will said with a sigh. “Charity begins at home.”
“So does mental illness.”
Fantasy 1920’s New York.
I nearly bought this from a thirft store recently and now I’m kicking myself for not getting it but if I like this series I want to have matching covers and the copy I found was not part of the new cover set.
│Challenger Deep│Neal Shusterman│Go│🌹│
Dead kids are put on pedestals, but mentally ill kids get hidden under the rug.
I kept this on my TBR because the first friend I ever made on Goodreads told me to read it but I just . . . don’t think I ever will?
│Noughts & Crosses│Noughts & Crosses #1│Malorie Blackman│Go│☀️🌹│
I used to comfort myself with the belief that it was only certain individuals and their peculiar notions that spoilt things for the rest of us. But how many individuals does it take before it’s not the individuals who are prejudiced but society itself?
I don’t know, I was still into dystopians I think.
│The Last Place You Look│Rozanne Weary #1│Kristen Lepionka│Stay│🌈☀️│
You know how it is, when you’re a kid and your parents do something,’ she said, ‘and it’s just like, whatever, but then later, when you grow up, you’re like, wait, that was actually really fucked up?
Added because of Emily May’s review
│The Geek Feminist Revolution│Kameron Hurley│Stay│🔥│
Your voice is powerful. Your voice has meaning. If it didn’t, people wouldn’t work so hard to silence you.
Geeky feminism is my jam.
I buried the girl I had been because she ran into all kinds of trouble. I tried to erase every memory of her, but she is still there, somewhere. She is still small and scared and ashamed, and perhaps I am writing my way back to her, trying to tell her everything she needs to hear.
I’ve had a complicated relationship with my body and my eating habits for as long as I can remember so I think this might be a really cathartic read for me.
Down The TBR Hole
│Milk and Honey│Rupi Kaur│Stay│🔥│
do not look for healing
at the feet of those
who broke you
It’s only the most hyped poetry collection!!!
│Unwind│Unwind Dystology #1│Neal Shusterman │Go│
You see, a conflict always begins with an issue – a difference of opinion, an argument. But by the time it turns into a war, the issue doesn’t matter anymore, because now it’s about one thing and one thing only: how much each side hates the other.
I don’t know it sounded cool but I’ve lost interest.
│Vigilante│Kady Cross │
A brutally honest, uncompromising story about a teen girl who decides to take matters into her own hands.
This gives me hella Sweet Vicious vibes and I fucking loved that show.
But I think I’m going to give this a miss.
│All the Crooked Saints│Maggie Stiefvater │
We almost always can point to that hundredth blow, but we don’t always mark the ninety-nine other things that happen before we change.
This was hella hyped when it first came out!
I was going to give it a miss but oops I changed my mind.
│Saints and Misfits│S.K. Ali │Stay│☀️🌹✨│
The truth does not change according to our ability to stomach it.
I mean it was totally a cover add but I still want to read this.
│Dread Nation│Dread Nation #1│Justina Ireland│Stay│🌈☀️│
I shrug. “My momma always said the best way to get what you want from people is to give them what they think they want. Sometimes you have to live down to people’s expectations, Kate. If you can do that, you’ll get much further in life.”
Historical fiction with zombies.
│Beyond Trans│Heath Fogg Davis│Stay│🌈🔥│
Later, when addressing sex-segregated sports, Davis unpacks the contradictory approaches to policing men’s and women’s sports. There is a greater emphasis, he argues, on “catching” men who are “pretending” to be women to gain an unfair advantage, whereas few people seem as concerned about women masquerading as men. He points out how this “trans misogyny” is in fact harmful to society at large: “this kind of misogyny is an extension of the general assumption that ‘femaleness and femininity are inferior to, and exist primarily for the benefit of, maleness and masculinity’.”
– Ben Babcock’s review
I love conversations of gender because its so complex and interesting.
│The Red Hunter│Lisa Unger│Go│🌹│
“What is the difference between justice and revenge?” he asked.
“Revenge seeks chaos,” he said. “Justice seeks balance. That’s the difference.”
This seemed like a good thriller but I’ve lost interest.
│Final Girls│Riley Sager│Stay│
We were, for whatever reason, the lucky ones who survived when no one else had. Pretty girls covered in blood. As such, we were each in turn treated like something rare and exotic. A beautiful bird that spreads its bright wings only once a decade.
The hype got me.
The review Krysitn @ Here’s the Fucking Twist posted kept me.
In fact, I just bought this one recently!
│Slasher Girls & Monster Boys│April Genevieve Tucholke│Stay│
Teenage girls know more than we’re given credit for. We sense danger even when everyone’s telling us it’s fine, he’s a perfectly nice man, an upstanding member of our community, have you tasted his sugar-cream pie?
Added because of Emily May’s review.
Yes yes yes yes you had me at slasher girls.
│Dear Martin│Nic Stone│Stay│☀️│
Do I just take what they dish out, try to stop being “so sensitive”? What do I do when my very identity is being mocked by people who refuse to admit there’s a problem?
│Forest of a Thousand Lanterns│Julie C. Dao│Rise of the Rmpress #1│Go│☀️│
“But in weakness, you find your strength. You leave pieces of yourself in everyone you love. Is that not the greatest power, to endure in that way?”
“I don’t know,” Xifeng said in a low voice. “I may never know.”
Added because of Emily May’s review but I’ve lost interest.
│Only Ever Yours│Louise O’Neill│Stay│🔥│
I want to hide, fold into the shadows and become invisible so no-one can look at me any more.
Louise O’Neill is a queen.
I recently picked up her book Almost Love too.
│Words on Bathroom Walls│Julia Walton│Go│🌹│
Most people are afraid of themselves, Adam. They carry that fear everywhere hoping no one will notice.
Schizophrenia is a mental illness that has affected my family in a number of ways and so I’m always interested in reading books that represent it well.
Unfortunately I’m no longer interested in this one.
│Godblind│Godblind #1│Anna Stephens│Go│
Then fuck you all, she thought, I’ll save myself.
This was mostly a cover add.
│Batman: Nightwalker│DC Icons #2│Marie Lu │Stay│
Fear clears the mind. Panic clouds it.
Hype hype hype hype.
For now I’ll keep it. We’ll see if I’m still interested once I’ve read Wonder Woman.
│The Near Witch│The Near Witch #1│Victoria Schwab │Stay│
If the moor wind ever sings, you mustn’t listen, not with all of your ears. Use only the edges.
│Stillhouse Lake│Stillhouse Lake #1│Rachel Caine │
Guns don’t keep anyone safe. They only equal the playing field.
I think I saw it in Big W but I’ve lost interest.
│Malice│The Faithful and the Fallen #1│John Gwynne │Go│
Come, boy, it is time for a lesson. Let me teach you the power of words
I think it was the title that made me add this but I don’t actually know.
So I changed my mind even more than last week.
But it worked in my favour because I got rid of two more books than I was going to.
My total was;
Go – 10
Stay – 15
Are any of these books on your TBR?
How do you organise your shelves?
