Down the TBR Hole // Oooooooooh That’s a Good Purge – 2016 TBR 2/2

DTTBRH - Explained

Its time for another Down the TBR Hole!

down the tbr hole alice in wonderland books

I am currently working two jobs again because I will never say no to extra work.

Which means I’m going to be working for 13 days straight at one point which is something I’ve done many times and always vow I’ll never do again. And yet here we are.

So, I’m still on hiatus even though I’ve quit my course because I have zero time and energy and loads of reviews I want to catch up on before I feel ready to return. Plus I’d really like to have some Grey Learns posts ready to go.

I’m glad I’ve got spreadsheets for these posts so the hard work is already done!

flame in the mist.jpgFlame in the Mist│Flame in the Mist #1│Renée Ahdieh│Stay│☀️│

The only power any man has over you is the power you give him.

Hellooooooo, it’s Mulan inspired!!!

I have to read it and I loved The Wrath & the Dawn duology.

I really loved the first cover art for this book but wow, now that I’ve really looked at this new one I’m in love!

The Nightingale│Kristin Hannah│Stay│

If I have learned anything in this long life of mine, it is this: in love we find out who we want to be; in war we find out who we are.

Added because of Emily May’s Review.

Everyone loves it and I’m interested enough to keep it.

The Fifth Season│The Broken Earth #1│N.K. Jemisin│Stay│🌈│

“We aren’t human.”
“Yes. We. Are.” His voice turns fierce. “I don’t give a shit what the something-somethingth council of big important farts decreed, or how the geomests classify things, or any of that. That we’re not human is just the lie they tell themselves so they don’t have to feel bad about how they treat us.”

I can’t for the life of me remember the exact reason I added this but it sounds good?

And I’m keeping it because of Elise’s review.

Still Life with Tornado│A.S. King│Stay│🌹│

The absence of violence is not love.

Added because of Emily May’s review and kept because of the review Elise @ The Bookish Actress posted.

pretty girlsPretty Girls│Karin Slaughter│Stay│

If a man rejects a woman, she goes home and cries for a few days. If a woman rejects a man, he can rape and kill her.

I’ve heard a lot of great things about Karin Slaughter and I figured this was a good place to start.

Krystin’s @ Here’s the Fucking Twist has reaffirmed my decision to read this book with her review.

+ I just picked this one up second hand for $2!

Highly Illogical Behavior│John Corey Whaley│Go│🌈🌹│

“You’re like Lady Macbeth without the murder.”
“Thank you. You have no idea how much of a compliment that is to me.”

Added because of Cait’s @ Paperfury review but I’m no longer interested.

Small Great Things│Jodi Picoult│Stay│☀️│

But passive racism? It’s noticing there’s only one person of color in your office and not asking your boss why. It’s reading your kid’s fourth-grade curriculum and seeing that the only black history covered is slavery, and not questioning why. It’s defending a woman in court whose indictment directly resulted from her race…and glossing over that fact, like it hardly matters.

Added because of Emily May’s review.

This sounds like a great book about racism.

+ I just picked this one up second hand!

Daughter of Smoke & Bone│Daughter of Smoke & Bone #1│Laini Taylor│Go│

Have you ever asked yourself, do monsters make war, or does war make monsters?

Another book I missed the hype train with that I wanted to try.

I think I’m good without it though.

The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks│E. Lockhart│Stay│

She will not be simple and sweet.
She will not be what people tell her she should be.

Added because of Emily May’s review.

I’ve enjoyed the two E. Lockhart books I’ve read so far.

And this one is staying for the secret societies and gender politics.

In the Woods│Dublin Murder Squad #1│Tana French│Go│

I had learned early to assume something dark and lethal hidden at the heart of anything I loved. When I couldn’t find it, I responded, bewildered and wary, in the only way I knew how: by planting it there myself.

Added because of Emily May’s review.

After reading Elise’s review I think I’m good giving this one a miss.

The Archived│The Archived #1│Victoria Schwab│Stay│

“It’s a shame they do that,” he says, thumbing through the pages. “Requirement ruins even the best of books.”

Its a Schwab book. That’s it. That’s the only reason I need.

my favourite manson girl.jpgMy Favourite Manson Girl│Alison Umminger│Stay│

The real danger wasn’t violence like you saw on the television news, random and exciting—the real danger was the vampiric kind, the sort that you invited in because it told you everything you wanted to hear. Charles Manson could never have been Charles Manson if there hadn’t been girls by the dozen, ready and willing, scarred by the silent cruelty behind those carefully locked doors.

Added because of Emily May’s review and I’m still here for it.

Homegoing│Yaa Gyasi│Go│☀️💐│

Evil begets evil. It grows. It transmutes, so that sometimes you cannot see that the evil in the world began as the evil in your own home.

Added because of Emily May’s review but I’ve lost interest.

Sweet Venom│Medusa Girls #1│Tera Lynn Childs │Go│

From the necks up… well, whoever said two heads are better than one never met a hydra.

Medusa!!!

Other than that this doesn’t seem to have much else to interest me, sadly.

The Bird and the Sword│The Bird and the Sword Chronicles #1│Amy Harmon│Go│

You don’t need wings to fly, she chirped.
What do you need, Daughter? I asked softly.
She looked up at me, her big, black eyes alight with knowledge, and she smiled.
Words.

Added because it sounded interesting but I don’t want to read it anymore.

the princess saves herself in this one.jpgThe Princess Saves Herself in This One│Women Are Some Kind of Magic #1│Amanda Lovelace│Stay│🔥│

that is what abuse is:
knowing you are
going to get salt
but still hoping for sugar
for nineteen years.

I love feminist poetry.

November

the sacred lies of minnow blyThe Sacred Lies of Minnow Bly│Stephanie Oakes│Stay│🌹│

Even after months of healing, it doesn’t take much to make me bleed.

Added because of Emily May’s review.

I will always, ALWAYS, trust Elise’s judgement when it comes to abuse narratives.

So I’m keeping this because of her review.

  • I recently picked this up from the library!

My Lady Jane│The Lady Janies #1│Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, Jodi Meadows│Go│

He wanted to tell her she’d have more room if she’d just get rid of her books, but he supposed that in her case, it would be like telling a mother she’d have more room if she threw out her children.

This sounded like a light and fun read but I’m not interested anymore.

Little Peach│Peggy Kern│Go│🌹│

Unlike a bag of heroin, a girl can be sold again and again

Added because of Emily May’s review.

Decided to give this one a miss thanks to Elise’s review.

Difficult Women│Roxane Gay│Go│🌈☀️🔥│

I was too smart and that made people uncomfortable–most folks where we’ve lived our whole lives don’t trust too much intelligence in a woman. There is also the problem of my eyes–they don’t hide anything. If I don’t care for a person, my eyes make it plain. I don’t care for most. Folks are generally comfortable with the small lies they tell each other. They don’t know what to do with someone like me, who mostly doesn’t bother with small lies.

Added because of Emily May’s review.

Decided to give this one a miss thanks to Elise’s review.

What We Saw│Aaron Hartzler │Go│🌹│

Words have meanings. When we call something a theory in science, it means something. Reggie, when you say that you ‘can’t help yourself’ if a girl is wasted, that means something, too. You’re saying that our natural state as men is ‘rapist’.

Added because of Emily May’s review but I’ve lost interest.

Even this Page is White│Vivek Shraya│Go│🌈☀️│

Brown life is an unbroken bearing of the weight and hollow of the active absence of brown life.

Added because of the title but I’ve lost interest.

the song of achillesThe Song of Achilles│Madeline Miller│Stay│🌈☀️🌹│

I feel like I could eat the world raw.

Added for the gay. Staying for the gay.

A Monster Calls│Patrick Ness, Jim Kay│Go│

There is not always a good guy. Nor is there always a bad one. Most people are somewhere in between.

Everyone fucking loves it but I’m good without it.

Lightning Separation

December

alif the unseen.jpgAlif the Unseen│G. Willow Wilson│Stay│☀️│

If man’s capacity for the fantastic took up as much of his imagination as his capacity for cruelty, the worlds, seen and unseen, might be very different.

Arab-Indian hacker!

I will always add a hacker book to my TBR in hopes I find something even closely resembling Eye Candy because I really fucking miss that show.

I Hunt Killers│I Hunt Killers #1│Barry Lyga│Go│

You won’t even know you’ve crossed the line until it’s way back in your rearview mirror.

Added because of Emily May’s review but have lost interest.

Here We Are│Kelly Jensen│Stay│🌈│

It’s critical we examine the kind of standards we hold fictional girls to and consider how it reflects in the way we treat real girls and, most important, what kind of emotional impact that has on them. What are we saying to girls when we cannot accept difficult, hurting female characters as being worthy of love because they are difficult and hurting?

I’m all about that feminist non-fic.

Say Her Name│Juno Dawson│Go│

Some people just shine a bit brighter than others and it’s got nothing to do with what they look like.

The cover looks creepy af but that’s not enough to keep it.

PainEater_cover_ARC.inddThe Pain Eater│Beth Goobie│Stay│🌹│

Because I’m not eating your pain anymore. And I’m not eating my silence anymore, either. Silence is a poison and it’s not a good poison.

Added because of Emily May’s review and this still looks good!

We Were Feminists Once│Andi Zeisler│Stay│🔥│

Empowerment wasn’t defined as a static concept or standalone occurrence, but as an evolving way to rethink entire power structures and value systems, draw on shared skills and knowledge, and endow marginalized communities with tools for economic sustainability.

It’s about the commercialization of feminism which is something that always really bothers me but also I want all the feminist merch???

Charm & Strange│Stephanie Kuehn│Go│🌹│

I am both ever evolving and ever decaying.

Added because of Emily May’s review but have lost interest.

American Street│Ibi Zoboi│Go│☀️│

We were too heavy. Not with our bags. Not with our bodies. But with our burdens.

Added because of Emily May’s review but have lost interest.

born a crimeBorn a Crime│Trevor Noah│Stay│☀️│

We tell people to follow their dreams, but you can only dream of what you can imagine, and, depending on where you come from, your imagination can be quite limited.

I love Trevor Noah so much!

My cousin keeps bugging me to hurry up and read this and I can’t wait to listen to it on Audible.

So I just finished this one this month and it was so so so good. I cried on multiple occasions and laughed just as much.

Allegedly│Tiffany D. Jackson│Stay│☀️🌹│

I never call the group home “home.” It’s not a home. No house where you fear for your life can be considered a home.

Added because of Emily May’s review and this still looks good!

Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine│Gail Honeyman│Go│

If someone asks you how you are, you are meant to say FINE. You are not meant to say that you cried yourself to sleep last night because you hadn’t spoken to another person for two consecutive days.

Added because of Emily May’s review but have lost interest.

The Big Lie│Julie Mayhew │Go│🌈🔥│

She refused to fall.

I think it was the cover.

eliza and her monstersEliza and Her Monsters│Francesca Zappia │Stay│🌹│

Broken people don’t hide from their monsters. Broken people let themselves be eaten.

This was very popular when it came out.

After reading Zappia’s Made You Up, I definitely want to give this a go.

This Is How It Always Is│Laurie Frankel│Go│🌈│

Just because it’s made up, doesn’t mean it isn’t real,” said Penn. “Made up is the most powerful real there is.

Added because of Emily May’s review but have lost interest.

Good Me, Bad Me│Ali Land│Stay│

“More disturbing than hurt is love when it’s wrong.”

Oh yes, I am here for a narrative about the daughter of a serial killer.

Now that is the kind of purge I aspire for.

Almost a 50/50 split of books that stay and ones that go!

My total was;

Go – 19

Stay – 20

Are any of these books on your TBR?
How do you organise your shelves?
