Down the TBR Hole // I’ve been on Goodreads For 4 Years! – 2016 TBR 1/2

DTTBRH - Explained

We’re back again

books bookcase bookshelves hannah witton

Next month I’ll have been on Goodreads for four years, though I didn’t start using it properly until three years ago.

And boy did it open up my whole book world! I started reviewing books and then I started this blog and it’s become such a lovely home to curl up in when I need comfort and to talk to like-minded people.

This week I’m covering my Want To Read shelf which is large! I’ve split it up by year and then I’ll be splitting those up too so that my posts aren’t super long. So they’ll be quite a few separate posts for this one shelf!

If you would like to buy any of the following books please consider using my Book Depository Affiliate link!

you deserve a drinkYou Deserve a Drink│Mamrie Hart│Stay│

When the apocalypse comes, it won’t just be cockroaches that survive. It will also be herpes and that random bottle of crème de menthe you bought years ago.

I fucking love Mamrie.

I’m really annoyed that this isn’t on Audible but Mamrie’s second book is (Which I read and it was amazing) but I’m still determined to read this one

Firsts│Laurie Elizabeth Flynn│Go│🔥│

Virginity is supposed to be something a girl gives up only when she is ready and feels comfortable, something a girl discusses at length with her friends and flip-flops over a million times in her mind before actually doing it. A guy is expected to be born ready.

But what I realized after Tommy is that they’re not. They’re just as scared as their girlfriends, maybe even more so because the onus is on them to be gentle, make it last, make it memorable. And most of them haven’t a clue.

I added this one because of the review Emily May posted.

The Memory of Light│Francisco X. Stork│Go│🌹│

But all I can feel right now is that someone turned on a light just long enough for me to see what I could never have, so that it would hurt me even more than if I had never seen it.

I added this one because of the review Emily May posted.

These are both books I’ve had on my GR list the longest and I just don’t think I’m ever going to pick them up.

Heartless│Marissa Meyer│Go│

Fascinating, isn’t it, how often heroic and foolish turn out to be one and the same.

I’ve missed to hype train on a lot of the older YA fantasy books people grew up loving. This is another one of those that I held out hope for loving when I eventually got to it.

I’ve still not got to it. I need to just accept the fact I’m never going to get to it.

Bossypants│Tina Fey│Stay│

Some people say, “Never let them see you cry.” I say, if you’re so mad you could just cry, then cry. It terrifies everyone.

I love memoirs, especially funny ones.

tina fey yay running celebrate

DIY, Dammit!│Joselyn Hughes│Go│

Wine is great for everything. Don’t let the people around you say any different. People in Europe drink vino at lunch and it’s considered classy and progressive. So, anyone who tells you different is closed-minded and probably racist.

I added this after watching a collab Hannah did with Joselyn and I love craft.

It’s time to take the pinout of this one.

Violent Ends│Shaun David Hutchinson │Stay│

All I have now is the knowledge that my brother did some good things and some monstrous things in my life. I can’t change any of it. But I can stop letting his actions define me.

As a murderino, I’ve always wanted to understand the psychology of what makes someone a killer. It always comes for the curious and empathetic part of me that always just wants to understand.

How am I only now just realising this is a fucking anthology????

My Drunk Kitchen│Hannah Hart│Stay│🌈│

There are certain people who will always seek to criticize. This has nothing to do with you. It must be hard to be inside their head, you know? I mean if they find so much fault in everyone around them… then one can only imagine the faults they must see in themselves.

I fucking love Hannah.

Again, I’m really annoyed that this isn’t on Audible but I’ve read her second book, Buffering and loved it, so I’m still determined to read this one!

Nothing But the Truth│Vicky Pattison│Stay│

I’ve never been able to stomach people who sit around moaning about their lives being crap. If you want something, you have to go out and get it. No one is going to hand anything to you on a plate. That’s not how life works.

I love Geordie Shore. It’s a guilty pleasure I don’t feel guilty for.

I’ve read both Charlotte’s (the first one) and Holly’s memoirs so I was super interested in reading Vicky’s. I even bought it and then lent it to my sister, never to be seen again.

Trumpet│Jackie Kay│Got│🌈│

When the love of your life dies, the problem is not that some part of you dies too, which it does, but that some part of you is still alive.

It was a book for the Banging Book Club that I never got around to reading and now I’m no longer interested.

I’m Supposed to Protect You from All This│Nadja Spiegelman│Stay│

“Oh Nadja!” my mother said. ‘You’re still stuck in your black-and-white phase of good and evil. The world is more complicated than that.”

This is marketed as a memoir of mothers and daughters and I have a very close relationship with my mother.

stalking jack the ripperStalking Jack the Ripper│Stalking Jack the Ripper #1│Kerri Maniscalco│Stay│

“Pretend I am as capable as a man? Please, sir, do not value me so little!”

I’m here for a Jack the Ripper retelling!

Asking for It│Kate Harding│Stay│🔥│

Women are no more important than any other potential victims, but we are the primary targets of the messages and myths that sustain rape culture. We’re the ones asked to change our behavior, limit our movements, and take full responsibility for the prevention of sexual violence in society.

I’m all about that feminist non-fic.</big<

How to Be a Woman│Caitlin Moran│Stay│🔥│

I cannot understand anti-abortion arguments that centre on the sanctity of life. As a species we’ve fairly comprehensively demonstrated that we don’t believe in the sanctity of life. The shrugging acceptance of war, famine, epidemic, pain and life-long poverty shows us that, whatever we tell ourselves, we’ve made only the most feeble of efforts to really treat human life as sacred.

I love Moran, I read her first novel so I’m excited to read her memoir.

Scrappy Little Nobody│Anna Kendrick│Stay│

I gave up on being Nice. I started putting more value on other qualities instead: passion, bravery, intelligence, practicality, humor, patience, fairness, sensitivity.

I fucking love Anna Kendrick!

anna kendrick blake lively are you asking for my hand in marriage

I just bought this actually! But I’ll likely read it via Audible.

This Book is Gay│Juno Dawson│Stay│🌈│

However you identify, be it lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, asexual, curious, or carrot, we all have something in common—we are a minority, and we have made brave steps to identify as such; we have refused to hide and made a declaration of who we are.

Give me all the LGBT non-fic.

We Should All Be Feminists│Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie│Go│🔥│

The problem with gender is that it prescribes how we should be rather than recognizing how we are. Imagine how much happier we would be, how much freer to be our true individual selves, if we didn’t have the weight of gender expectations.

I added this because everyone loves it.

Unfortunately, the few who didn’t, made some good points and I don’t really have an interest in reading this any longer.

In the Countin the country we love.jpgry We Love│Diane Guerrero, Michelle Burford│Stay│☀️🌹│

My work on Orange has taught me this: Human beings are not categorically bad because of their mistakes. They can learn from their errors and get back on track. No one should be forever written off because of one part of his or her history.

I loved Orange Is the New Black and even though I’m don’t really watch it anymore, I still want to read about Guerrero’s story.

Anna Dressed in Blood│Anna #1│Kendare Blake│Stay│🌈☀️💐🌹🌑🔥🍃✨│

But hey, at least we’ll have this strange story to tell, love and death and blood and daddy-issues. And holy crap, I’m a psychiatrist’s wet dream.

Added because of Emily May’s review.

The Diabolic│The Diabolic #1│S.J. Kincaid │Go│

Our ancestors sought knowledge, but we, their descendants, glorify ignorance.

I mean, I don’t even remember why I added this, it was probably the cover.

Talking as Fast as I Can│Lauren Graham│Stay│

An important tool against self-doubt is just to ignore it. Forge ahead anyway. Just keep going, keep going, keep going.

I loved Gilmore Girls growing up. It was my favourite show. I’d watch episodes on foxtel when I could until I got the boxset and then basically did nothing but watch it until I’d finished the whole series.

No, really, I slept in the spare room and only came out to use the bathroom and get food. I probably looked like a gremlin.

gilmore girls lorelai

Code Name Verity│Code Name Verity, #1│Elizabeth E. Wein│Stay│

Don’t know how I kept going. You just do. You have to, so you do.

SPIES.

That pretty much all I need to see to add a book to my TBR and yet…I can’t list a single book I’ve read that had my spies in it???

The Butterfly Garden│The Collector, #1│Stay│🌹│

Some people stay broken. Some pick up the pieces and put them back together with all the sharp edges showing.

This has been on my TBR for so long that I didn’t even know what it was about anymore.

Now that I’ve read the synopsis again I’m hella pumped for this twisted thriller!

it ends with us.jpgIt Ends with Us│Colleen Hoover│Stay│🌹│

And as hard as this choice is, we break the pattern before the pattern breaks us.

Added because of Emily May’s review.

Elise @ The Bookish Actress post this review this last year and reaffirmed I need to read it and I found it for cheap second hand so I now own a slightly water damaged copy of this book.

the queen of bloodThe Queen of Blood│The Queens of Renthi, #1│Sarah Beth Durst│Stay│

Whether you made your choices with your eyes open or closed, they’re made. It’s not time to regret them; it’s time to live with the consequences.

Added because of Emily May’s review.

Reign the Earth│The Elementae, #1│A.C. Gaughen│Go│☀️🌹🔥│

I will not be broken or diminished or belittled by the choices of men around me.

That cover is gorgeous but I’ve lost interest.

This is Not a Test│This is Not a Test #1│Courtney Summers│Stay│🌹│

I’ve been variations of hurt my whole life.

I fucking love Courtney Summers.

Both All the Rage and Sadie had left me in steaming hot angry tears and I expect nothing less from any other book she’s written.

rape culture feminisim anger

Saint Death│Marcus Sedgwick │Go│☀️│

And they end up in the rich countries, and you know what people say… ¡Migrants! ¡illegal aliens! But everyone is a migrant, everyone, outside of the African cradle. It’s just a question of how back in time you care to look…

Added because of Emily May’s review but Since reading the review Elise @ The Bookish Actress posted I’ve lost interest.

wreckedWrecked│Maria Padian│Stay│🌹🔥│

For Carrie, words were volatile, intentional, Molotov cocktails of meaning.

Added because of Emily May’s review.

Shrill│Lindy West│Stay│🔥│

Feminism is really just the long slow realization that the things you love hate you.

I’m all about that feminist non-fic.
