The smell of organisation is in the air.
It’s time to get back to my sort shelf and get rid of some books!
If you would like to buy any of the following books please consider using my Book Depository Affiliate link!
│Screen Queens│Lori Goldstein│Stay│🔥│
This summer Silicon Valley is a girls’ club.
Three thousand applicants. An acceptance rate of two percent. A dream internship for the winning team. ValleyStart is the most prestigious high school tech incubator competition in the country. Lucy Katz, Maddie Li, and Delia Meyer have secured their spots. And they’ve come to win.
Meet the Screen Queens.
You can read a review by Nathalie @ The Nerd Daily.
│Girl Logic│Iliza Shlesinger│Stay│🔥│
But women live in the gray, bathe in the gray, and summer in the gray. There are more than fifty shades of it, many of which don’t involve S&M. We invariably consider the past, present, and future when making any choice because for us the stakes are higher emotionally (because we care about consequences) or just logistically (because we are aware of consequences in the first place).
│The Grace Year│Kim Liggett│Stay│🌈☀️💐🌹🌑🔥│
“We’re dangerous creatures. Full of devil charms. If given the opportunity, we will use our magic to lure men to sin, to evil, to destruction.” My eyes are getting heavy, too heavy to roll in a dramatic fashion. “That’s why they send us here.”
“To rid yourself of your magic,” he says.
“No,” I whisper as I drift off to sleep. “To break us.”
I could always do with some teenage rebellion and feminism.
│American Royals│Katharine McGee│Stay│
I think I saw it on Netgalley and it looks super interesting!
I love fictional and historical royals.
Which is funny because I’ve never been that interested in the current royals until Megan Markle and Harry became a thing because I fucking love her.
The idea of living with someone scares me senseless. I’ve done it before for five years, and I shut down to cope with it. I don‘t want to give up myself again. I hope to find someone who is happy just to continue “as is” without expectations.
│The Guide to Good Mental Health on the Autism Spectrum│Jeanette Purkis, Emma Goodall, Jane Nugent│Stay│🌈☀️💐🌹🌑🔥│
Being young is hard. I was so isolated and alienated when I was young. All I wanted was a friend. I want the world to be different for young Auties than it was for me.
Not all the features of atypical human operating systems are bugs.
So… I think maybe I might be autistic??
I’d like to be tested soon, only the testing costs a fortune. But my therapist did put me in touch with a woman who was diagnosed as an adult and she recommended the three books above.
│With the Fire on High│Elizabeth Acevedo │Stay│🌈☀️💐🌹🌑🔥│
Food is meant to feed more than an empty belly. It’s also meant to nourish your heart.
Teen mum who loves to cook is basically the description for my mum and her sisters 15-25 years ago so I am on board!
Check out the review Chaima @ Runaway With The Dream Thieves posted.
│The Hierophant’s Daughter│The Disgraced Martyr Trilogy #1│M.F. Sullivan│Go│
In an era when mankind’s intergenerational cold wars against their long-lived predators seem close to running hot, the Holy Family is poised on the verge of complete planetary control. It will take a miracle to save humanity from extinction.
I honestly have no idea why I added this one.
│If, Then│Kate Hope Day│Go│
She’s not very good at it — loving and being loved.
I think I saw it in a store???
│Scavenge the Stars│Scavenge the Stars #1│Tara Sim│Stay│🌈☀️💐🌹🌑🔥│
Revenge… It was a word of fire and blood, of a knife’s whisper and the priming of a pistol.
That cover could stab me and I’d thank it.
│The Stonewall Riots│Gayle E. Pitman│Stay│🌈☀️🌹│
This was just another battle. Nobody thought of it as History, Her-Story, My-Story, Your-Story or Our-Story. We were being denied a place to dance together. That’s all.
│Queer Heroes│Arabelle Sicardi, Sarah Tanat-Jones│Stay│🌈☀️🌹│
This beautiful, bold book celebrates the achievements of LGBT people through history and from around the world.
│We Are Everywhere│Leighton Brown, Matthew Riemer│Stay│🌈☀️🌹│
“Nature,” she told her parents, “made the mistake which I have had corrected and I am now your daughter.”
│The Book of Pride│Mason Funk│Stay│🌈🌹│
In the mid-90s… the most prevalent form of hate language in the school was anti-gay language. Constant ridicule and verbal harassment, coupled with physical harassment, shoving, hitting, tripping, and punching… Teachers would not typically intervene because to target LGBT people was acceptable.
All four of the above were added for the gay history. That’s it. And that’s reason enough.
But the last one, The Book of Pride, I bought on Audibe and have been loving it! So rich in history. So many tears shed before I even get to work.
Down The TBR Hole
│Never-Contented Things│Sarah Porter│
You’re still real enough that I love you.
So I fully intended to dump this off my TBR but Elise @ The Bookish Actress has posted her review since then and now I have to read it. I don’t make the rules.
I totally make the rules.
│Less│Andrew Sean Greer│Go│🌈│
How can so many things become a bore by middle age — philosophy, radicalism, and other fast foods — but heartbreak keeps its sting?
Not 100% sure why I added this one.
│The Best Bad Things│Katrina Carrasco │Go│🌈☀️│
She is being two things at once. Grinning hard like Camp, chin up like Camp. She is in the gray space between identities and he sees her and she is lit up, spark filled, starving.
I mean that title is attention grabbing but I’ve lost interest.
│Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up with Me│Mariko Tamaki, Rosemary Valero-O’Connell│Stay│🌈☀️🌹│
Love is hard. Breaking up is hard. Love is dramatic. Breaking up is dramatic.
A graphic novel on toxic relationships and its gay!!!
I’m incapable of saying no to gay graphic novels.
In fact, I just picked this one up from the library and it was so good. It’s was such a good representation of how easy it is to fall into toxic relationships without even realising it and how difficult it is to break the cycle.
I need no one, I want no one and no one wants me. That is the finest way to pass through this world, running so swiftly even the air cannot stick. I shake off everything as a fox sheds its tail when the hounds take hold. I’ll skip through this world tailless rather than not at all.
There’s a fox on the cover… I love foxes…
But not enough to pick up this book.
│The Not Wives│Carley Moore│Go│
The Not Wives traces the lives of three women as they navigate the Occupy Wall Street movement and each other.
Sounded interesting enough but I’ve lost interest.
│Missing, Presumed Dead│Emma Berquist│Stay│🌈🌹│
Because being with you makes me lonelier than being alone. Because I can’t stop picturing your body on a cold metal table.
Gay fantasy-mystery is all I need to add this to my tbr.
│A People’s History of Heaven│Mathangi Subramanian│Go│🌈│
“It’s not that I don’t want to be part of something bigger,” Rukshana says to no one in particular. “It’s that I want to be myself first.”
│In Case You Forgot│Frederick Smith, Chaz Lamar│Go│🌈☀️│
Two newly single, Black, queer, and socially aware men have packed up to start again–in love, career, and life–in the West Hollywood neighborhood of LA.
│The Crimson Ribbon│Katherine Clements│Go│🌈│
England 1646. The Civil War is raging and society turned upside down.
The three book above were added for the gay but I have lost interest.
│Stepsister│Jennifer Donnelly │Stay│🔥│
They cut away pieces of me. But I handed them the knife.
I’m always up for a feminist retelling of a Disney classic.
│Fragile Wings│Rebecca S. Buck│Go│🌈│
Evelyn Hopkins leaves everything she knows and heads to London at the height of the Roaring Twenties, intent upon living her life to the fullest. But will the dark cloud of the Great War keep her from happiness and love?
20’s gays was enough for me to add it to my TBR but not enough for me to keep it there.
│Tradition│Brendan Kiely │Go│🌹🔥│
We live by the lies we believe.
Added for the boarding school.
│100 Days of Sunlight│Abbie Emmons│Stay│💐│
When 16-year-old poetry blogger Tessa Dickinson is involved in a car accident and loses her eyesight for 100 days, she feels like her whole world has been turned upside-down.
I’ve been following Abbie’s blog for a while now as she’s got loads of writing advice!
So of course I want to read her book.
And my EARC request was accepted!
│The Similars│The Similars #1│Rebecca Hanover│Go│
When six clones join Emmaline’s prestigious boarding school, she must confront the heartbreak of seeing her dead best friend’s face each day in class.
Added for the boarding school and clones, but I’ve lost interest.
│Untitled│Villains #3│V.E. Schwab│Stay│
V.E. Schwab is my queen
│The Deceivers│The Vale Hall #1│Kristen Simmons │Stay│
But careful isn’t an option. Careful is a luxury you have when your baseline isn’t chaos. When every decision isn’t determined by a calculated risk. In lives like ours, you grasp onto those who understand you, or you face every obstacle alone.
A school for con artists!!!
I will add anything that so much as closely resembles Ocean’s 8.
│Miracle Creek│Angie Kim│Stay│☀️🌹│
Or perhaps the newspapers were right. Perhaps Elizabeth had been desperate to get rid of her son, and now that he was dead, she finally had a measure of peace. Perhaps she had been a monster all along.
This could either be super thought provoking or incredibly offensive. I’m keen to see where it lands.
│Little Darlings│Melanie Golding│Stay│
She had to play the game, even before she knew what the rules were
Psychological thriller with changelings!
│Paul Takes the Form of a Mortal Girl│Andrea Lawlor│Stay│🌈│
When women cover songs by men, they don’t swap the pronouns. Is this a.) a lack of anxiety about convention, b.) a biologically essential fluidity native to humans with vaginas and/or two X chromosomes, c.) rampant queerness among women singers, or d.) the universal male default?
Queer shape shifter!!!
│The Sidekicks│Will Kostakis│Stay│🌈│
“One, there was never any mention of this being a gathering. Two, I do not trust anyone who leaves home without a book. It is just not right.”
Gays in Australia!
│The Van Apfel Girls Are Gone│Felicity McLean│Stay│
So many words, but none of them were enough. None of them brought those girls home.
This book came up when I was searching for where I can read The Girls Are Gone.
That’s my sorted shelf done!
Still didn’t get rid of as many as I wanted but I did better than last week so I still count this as a win.
My total was;
Go – 13
Stay – 24
What books are on your TBR?
How do you organise your shelves?
