I know, I know.
I just finished posting my last Down the TBR Hole posts like 2 months ago and I complained almost the whole time and yet here I am doing it all over again.
But I learned some things! Like don’t try to sort through all of the books on your Goodreads shelves and then immediately write all the Down The TBR Hole posts in one hit.
That’s too much for anyone.
No, I’m taking my time. Writing these posts between catching up on reviews and hopefully pre-writing a bunch of Grey Learn posts.
I went through all my Goodreads shelves when I first went on semi-hiatus, there’s a whole colour-coded spreadsheet I did. Now that I’ve let it settle, it’s time for me to come back to it.
While I was going through my shelves I drastically reduced the number of shelves I have, both exclusive and non-exclusive alike. It was excessive. And it was taking far too much time just to put a book on all the appropriate shelves. So I reduced it.
This time round I’m only going through 5 exclusive shelves;
⛈️ Graphic Novels
⛈️ TBR – further separated by year added
So first up is my sort shelf. Which is a shelf where I put books I find when I’m on the go and don’t have time to go through and organise them properly. This is also a great shelf for making sure I do actually want to read it. I can be a bit impulsive when it comes to books so this gives me a chance to look at books I added recently with fresh eyes.
I made it in hopes of going through it once a month but instead it tends to be more like 5-6 months.
So I’ll be covering this shelf in two posts. The other one will be up next week. And I’ve also sectioned them up according to the month I added them.
I’m including quotes that drew me in, the reviews that made me add them and a little commentary as to what made me decide I needed to read the book. And if you click the title it’ll take you to the Goodreads page.
As always, I also included an emoji key for representation These aren’t for certain. Since I haven’t read any of these books I can only go by other people’s reviews.
I’ve also changed my representation key because I’ve decided I prefer a nature inspired code and also they look nicer on desktop, since they now appear slightly different there.
If you would like to buy any of the following books please consider using my Book Depository Affiliate link!
│The Girls Are Gone│Michael Brodkorb, Allison Mann│Stay│
Opening Argument: Your Honour, this case comes down to one fact – this fucking bitch is cray.
The Clients: One bad mommy, one fucked over father.
Plot Truthy-ness: Told factually with care, but emotionally leaning to one side.
– Krystin @ Here’s the Fucking Twist
This one I added thanks to the review Krystin @ Here’s the Fucking Twist posted.
Sometimes you just need a fucking batshit family court drama.
│The Swans of Fifth Avenue│Melanie Benjamin│Go│
It was her style, that indefinable asset. It was said that the others had style but Babe was style.
I believe I added this because I got Evelyn Hugo vibes and I will search high and low to get the feeling I got from reading it again. But I don’t think this will capture that same feeling for me.
│How She Died, How I Lived│Mary Crockett│Go│
I am many things, but loveable isn’t one of them.
Since mid last year, I’ve been on the search for more YA thrillers and this seemed suspensey enough but after looking over it again I’m not as interested.
│The Haunting of Hill House│Shirley Jackson, Laura Miller│Go│
I am like a small creature swallowed whole by a monster, she thought, and the monster feels my tiny little movements inside.
Like many, I was pulled in to The Haunting of Hill House Netflix series and boy oh boy! My mum and I binge watched it and I loved everything about it. But mostly I loved Theo. I really really love Theo.
So when I did my obligatory googling of the show after I finished and discovered that it was based on a book I was very exciting to get more…Only the series is very loosely based on the book and none of the characters are the same which means I don’t get the Theo I love. And the review Krystin @ Here’s the Fucking Twist posted helped me know for sure that I was making the right decision in moving it to my Nah shelf.
Down The TBR Hole
│City of Girls│Elizabeth Gilbert│Stay│
At some point in a woman’s life, she just gets tired of being ashamed all the time. After that, she is free to become whoever she truly is.
Another book that gave me strong Evelyn Hugo vibes.
│Revolting Prostitutes│Molly Smith, Juno Mac│Stay│🍃🔥│
People sell sex to get money. This simple fact is often missed, forgotten, or overlooked… Pathologising sex workers as unable to make ‘good’ decisions, rather than seeing them as people largely motivated by familiar, mundane needs, can lead to disastrous consequences.
I try to make sure my feminism supports and is inclusive of sex workers so I want to learn more and this seems like a good place to start.
│On the Jellicoe Road│Melina Marchetta│Go│🌈☀️💐🌹🌙🔥│
I don’t even remember adding this so I can’t tell you exactly why I did, other than a lot of people seem to love it??? So I’m gonna say no on this one.
│The Fever King│Feverwake #1│Victoria Lee│Stay│🌈☀️🌹│
That was the whole point. Governments didn’t have to listen to the people until the people made it hurt to not listen.
I’m not even big on scifi but this just sounds dope af + it sounds hecka gay.
│Serpent & Dove│Serpent & Dove #1│Shelby Mahurin│Stay│
Wicked are the ways of women — and especially a witch.
I’m a simple girl. I see witches, I add it to my TBR.
│The Kiss Quotient│The Kiss Quotient #1│Helen Hoang│Stay│☀️🌹│
She wasn’t broken. She saw and interacted with the world in a different way, but that was her.
Since last year, I’ve been trying really hard to overcome my internalised misogyny when it comes to romance and a lot of people seem to like this one plus I want read some autistic rep and Cait @ Paperfury loved it.
│Nine Perfect Strangers│Liane Moriarty│Stay│🌈🔥│
Sometimes your life changes so slowly and imperceptibly that you don’t notice it at all until one day you wake up and think: How did I get here?
I added this for two reason.
- I have both watched and read Big Little Lies and loved both versions.
- I read the review Elise @ The Bookish Actress posted and honestly when won’t I read a book she’s rated 4-5 stars???
Also I just bought this book so now it’s on my owned TBR shelf!
│Let’s Pretend This Never Happened│Jenny Lawson│Stay│
A friend is someone who knows where all your bodies are buried. Because they’re the ones who helped you put them there.
And sometimes, if you’re really lucky, they help you dig them back up.
I love a good memoir and this looks like it would be a riot.
Words can be whispered bullet-quick when no one’s looking, and words don’t leave blood or bruises behind. Words disappear without a trace. That’s what makes them so powerful. That’s what makes them so important.
That’s what makes them hurt so much.
I want to be McGuire’s friend and I think if I read all of her books I might stand a chance.
When I wake up, all my friends are dead.
As someone who has battled addiction, an addiction developed to cope with chronic pain, I’m hoping this books makes me feel SEEN.
Also shout out to Vicky’s @ Vicky Who Reads because her review is what first put this book on my radar.
│In the Neighborhood of True│Susan Kaplan Carlton│Go│☀️✨│
He reminded us that we were all a small part of a larger story of hate, that all along, the clock had been ticking. And now the alarm rang for us.
The cover is gorgeous and the topic is important but going off the reviews this seems like it might fall a bit flat.
│Welcome to the Writer’s Life│Paulette Perhach│Stay│
I want to start reading writing craft books.
│The Huntress│Kate Quinn│Stay│🌈🌹│
There’ll be a chance, Nina Borisovna, her father had said. Don’t ask, when you see it. Just fucking take it.
There is nothing I don’t love about this.
Also check out the review Chaima @ Runaway with the Dream Thieves posted!
│Girls of Storm and Shadow│Girls of Paper and Fire #2│Natasha Ngan │Stay│🌈☀️🌹│
Love is a sacred word reserved only for rebel girls and their warrior girlfriends, aka Lei and Wren
– Chaima @ Runaway with the Dream Thieves
I want Lei and Wren to step on me.
I read the first book and it was so gay I love it.
│Nocturna│A Forgery of Magic #1│Maya Motayne│Undecided│☀️🌹│
A fox does not wait for an invitation, he waits for an opening.
I’m sorry??? A face-changing thief???
I am going to wait until more reviews come in before I commit to this one I think.
│Sorcery of Thorns│Margaret Rogerson│Stay│🌈🌹│
When terrible things have happened to you, sometimes the promise of something good can be just as frightening.
<big>A protector of books and a bisexual love interest is enough to sign me the fuck up.</big>
│The Orphan’s Code│C.R.R. Hillin, Catherine Rose Hillin│Go│
The fight was over, and he had lost.
I added this thanks to the review Cait @ Paperfury posted but I’ve since lost interest
│Plain Bad Heroines│Emily M. Danforth│Stay│
Boarding schools and horror movies and all round creepiness sounds exactly like my kind of book and it’s by the author who wrote The Miseducation of Cameron Post.
pls. pls. be gay.
│The Silence of the Girls│Pat Barker│Stay│🌹🔥│
I was a slave, and a slave will do anything, anything at all, to stop being a thing and become a person again.
My co-worker wrote a poetry story that played with the Helen of Troy story and it was really fucking good so I wanna know more
│The Flatshare│Beth O’Leary│Stay│🌈☀️🌹│
I wake with a jolt that sends a shock of pain through my ankle. Crying out, I look around me. Floral wallpaper. Am I at home? Who’s that man in the chair by the door, reading …. “Twilight?”
Leon blinks at me, putting the book down in his lap. “You went from unconscious to judgemental very quickly there.”
Um two people share a bed and communicate through post it notes and probably fall in love????? Sign me the fuck up
I also just bought this book so it’s now on my Physical TBR.
│All of Us with Wings│Michelle Ruiz Keil│Go│🌈☀️🌹│
“You’re family now. Whether you live here or not, you’re stuck with us.”
A San Fran fairytale where queer is the norm.
There are some aspects of this book that I’m not comfortable with reading.
│A Lesson in Thorns│Thornchapel #1│Sierra Simone│Stay│🌈🌹│
Thornchapel waited. And in a clearing in the woods, in a church ruined by thorns and time, something stirred. Something called all six of them by name.
I mean, as Melanie @ Mel To The Any puts it in her review, this book has the best cover of all time.
│The Perfect Child│Lucinda Berry│Stay│🌹│
It never crossed anyone’s mind that someone else might be in trouble. I wished it would’ve. Maybe then things would’ve ended differently.
Hey yo fucked up children is kind of my family’s legacy.
Also I downloaded this from Prime Reading which is a thing I don’t really understand??? Does it work the same as Kindle Unlimited where you just borrow the books???
│Ask Again, Yes│Mary Beth Keane│Stay│🌹│
“The thing is, Peter, grown-ups don’t know what they’re doing any better than kids do. That’s the truth.”
There might come a day where I no longer add books exclusively based on one particular review by a reviewer I trust. But probably not.
This one I added because of the review Emily May posted.
│Girls on the Verge│Sharon Biggs Waller│Stay│🔥│
Thirty minutes feels like forever when you’re standing in a hot alley with abortion pills under your tongue.
Who are we? People with uteruses!
What do we want? At least as much bodily autonomy as a corpse!
You know. At the very least. Come on.
│Loveless│Alice Oseman │Stay│🌈│
This book: *exists*
Me: *strangled screaming*
Me: *pounds fist on table*
Me: did yOU HEAR
Me: ALICE OSEMAN HAS A NEW BOOK
Me: AND IT CENTERS AN ARO-ACE MC
Me: *more screaming*
– Chaima @ Runaway with the Dream Thieves
I have all of Oseman’s books on my TBR and do you think I’ve read a single one of them yet??? I have read her graphic novel, Heartstopper and omg it’s so cute.
Anyway this sounds like it’ll have good ace rep!
│The Boy Who Steals Houses│C.G. Drews│Stay│🌹│
He doesn’t break into houses because he enjoys stealing. He stalks vacant windows and tricks locks and sleeps in stolen beds because he just wants to be home.
It’s another book by Cait @ Paperfury and I swear to god I’m going to get around to reading at least one of them this year… I type as I’m exclusively reading only graphic novels and short non-fiction because my financial course is slowly killing me.
│Working Stiff│Judy Melinek, T.J. Mitchell│Stay│
Opening Autopsy: Putting the Y-incision in a “Y-incision party!”
Main Medical Examiner: A nerd goddess
Plot Truthy-ness: Just a doctor who loves her work and wants to share it.
– Krystin @ Here’s The Fucking Twist
I really enjoyed Smoke Gets in Your Eyes so I want to give this a shot.
Plus the review Krystin’s @ Here’s The Fucking Twist posted helped too.
│Like a Love Story│Abdi Nazemian│Stay│🌈☀️🌹│
The most important four-letter word in our history will always be LOVE. That’s what we are fighting for. That’s who we are. Love is our legacy.
I am ready to fucking sob
Also none of my state’s libraries have it and frankly, that’s homophobic
│Portrait of My Body as a Crime I’m Still Committing│Topaz Winters│Stay│🌈☀️💐🌹│
many times my body
has been more ache
My relationship with my body is a very complicated and emotional one for a whole number of reasons so I’m hoping this might help me heal.
What a start!
I didn’t get rid of as many books as I would have liked but I think my expectations were too high.
My total was;
Go – 6
Stay – 28
Are any of these books on your TBR?
How do you organise your shelves?
