Sometimes you just gotta keep your books to yourself!
Whenever someone asks for a book recommendation, i get excited! And then I offer to loan them the book and either don’t see if again for a year, until I tell them they have to give it back now or it is lost forever.
So…I don’t really loan my books out to anyone anymore. except for maybe my cousin because she does read them eventually and I know I’ll get them back so it’s fine.
But there are some books that I will never let anyone read. I wouldn’t even let my mum read them, but thankfully that’s not a conversation we ever need to have since she only reads ebooks.

│A Darker Shade of Magic│Collector’s Edition│V.E. Schwab│
“I’m not going to die,” she said. “Not till I’ve seen it.”
Her smile widened. “Everything.”
If my house caught on fire there are three things I would save.
- My cat, Charlie, because I love him and he’s an idiot and would probably hide under my bed until he burned to a crisp.
- My mum. I didn’t put her first because she’d probably be better in a crises and it’s more likely that she would be saving me.
- This book. And probably the rest of the books on this list. But this one is the priority because it’s the collectors edition of one of my favourite books. And it’s one of the books I’ve spent the most money on and I don’t know if our home and contents insurance would cover it and if it did would I be able to even still buy it???
│Vicious│Collector’s Edition│V.E. Schwab│
The absence of pain led to an absence of fear, and the absence of fear led to a disregard for consequence.
Okay so I’d probably save this one too because God I love this book. And it also was expensive.
I’m pretty sure I’ve forgotten a little bit of how much I love this book but I’m sure I’ll remember exactly how much when I reread it soon!
│Vengeful│Collector’s Edition│V.E. Schwab│
How many men would she have to turn to dust before one took her seriously?
Okay well if I’m saving Vicious, the first book in this series, I should probably save Vengeful too. But the love I have for this book is yet unknown because I haven’t actually read it yet.
│City of Bones│10th Anniversary Edition│Cassandra Clare│
The boy never cried again, and he never forgot what he’d learned: that to love is to destroy, and that to be loved is to be the one destroyed.
Ahhhh, the series that got me back into reading.
Even though I don’t think I’d like this series as much if I were to reread it, it holds a special place in my heart because it got me reading voraciously again.
Also it’s pretty. And even my editions of the whole series are drop dead gorgeous.
I think of the series the same way I think of Jace. There’s not that much depth but at least they’re pretty.
│Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone│10th Anniversary Slytherin Edition│J.K.Rowling│
“It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends.”
I mean I had to buy it really. I have my problems with the author god there are so many. when will she stop??? But I can’t help but love the series.
Also it got me back into reading when I was in my final year of high school and that’s no small feat. How many times did I stop reading frequently only to start again later on??? I’ve lost count.
│Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone│10th Anniversary Ravenclaw Edition│J.K.Rowling│
Fear of a name increases fear of the thing itself.
Don’t ask me why I have both of them. I’m in both houses okay and I won’t be told any different.
│Harry Potter Box Set│Adult Paperbacks│J.K. Rowling│
You sort of start thinking anything’s possible if you’ve got enough nerve.
I got this set for a steal, I tell you. They’re so pretty I could die.
I was going to slowly purchase the newer illustrated paperbacks over time, since I never actually owned the books (I’d borrowed them off a friend in high school), but then I saw someone selling this set for really cheap and it was in near perfect condition and its the set I had resigned myself to never getting a hold of even though I’d wanted it since I read the books as a teenager.
So no, I’m not letting anyone touch them. If they want to borrow them they can get them from the library or borrow them from a different friend.
│Looking for Alaska│10th Anniversary Edition│John Green│
“Why are you wearing your fox hat?” I asked.
“Because no one can catch the motherfucking fox.”
This is the first special edition book I ever purchased. I would have been 19 or 20.
I mean it’s Gold for crying out loud and I bought it back when Looking for Alaska was still my favourite book of all time. You know, that time in your life when you could pick just one because you hadn’t read that many books just yet.
I mean, it’s since been unceremoniously kicked off it’s pedestal but it still holds a special place in my heart.
│Rejected Princess│Hardback│Jason Porath│
She began to read. And read. And in short order, she became dangerous.
I love history and when I discovered the Rejected Princesses website I very nearly died so when I saw that Porath was releasing a book I knew I had to buy it!
It’s fucking huge and heavy and God does it physically hurt to read I told you, it’s fucking heavy but since I’ve decided to read 10 entries each month, I just take photos on my phone and read them that way.
But God damn it, if I was someone who had even the slightest interest in having kids this would have been a book I would want to pass down.
Instead I’m going to keep it for myself and maybe leave it to one my cousin’s daughters or one of their daughters in my will when I die.
│Bygone Badass Broads│Hardback│Mackenzi Lee│
So, everything seemed to be going great in Christina’s court, where “Single Ladies” played on repeat and there were free JSTOR credentials for all.
I loved following Lee’s stories of badass women on Twitter so when she released a book about them I bought it, even though I didn’t really have the money, because, and I quote: “it’s research for my blog“.
And then proceeded to not read it for a whole year, and I’m still yet to use it in a Grey Learns post but whatever. It was worth it still.
I’m also reading this one each month until I finish it this year.
And I’l probably leave it to some distant female relative as well.
Or if all goes to plan, one day I’ll be able to create a library of books filled with feminist literature and women of history for the women and girls in my family and I’ll keep it at my nana’s house so people can come and go and learn and grow. I’ll know I’ve made it in life when I can pull that off.
For now I’m just happy I can lend some of my books to my one cousin who actually reads and supply an endless TBR to my mum.
