This week’s Top Ten Tuesday is a Freebie!
Which means I get to cover a topic I missed but really wanted to do!
This week I’m covering my top ten backlist books that I want to get to except as always I’m bending the bloody rules.
I’m going to be count series as just one book because otherwise, I could just make this whole post on just ONE series because I have a book buying problem.
I know, I know. I’m preaching to the choir here!
A bit of back story for my backlist;
When I first got back into reading, the latest time (2016) I had hardly any books to read! Most of the 50 books I read that year were made up of library loans and my housemate’s collection!
I had hardly any space for more books so I unhauled most of the books I had collected over the years and decided to start fresh.
I thought it would take me ages to build up my collection again because I didn’t have a whole lot of money.
I was wrong!
I started buying a lot of books second hand for really cheap plus my mum wanted to support my reading so Christmas would roll around, closely followed by my birthday and most of my presents were made up of books from my wish list.
This last year I thought I was going to be moving interstate and I would lose my states library system which I fucking love so I wanted to take advantage of it by reading almost exclusively library books.
All the while I was still buying myself books and now my physical owned TBR is at 81 books. (This does include several rereads though!)
That’s a little ridiculous especially considering how many of those books I have desperately been wanting to read but have been put on the back burner in favour of library books.
Well, next year I want to focus on reading books on the top of TBR! That means I want to prioritize all the books I am the most hyped about! Whether they are my owned books or library books, but I want to specifically focus on the owned books at the beginning of the year.
That’s why I picked this topic as my freebie this week.
If I post about it on the internet then surely that’ll hold me accountable right????
This is my way of publicly shaming myself.
│The Conqueror’s Saga│Kiersten White│
As the baby latched on with surprising fierceness, the nurse offered her own prayer.
Let her be strong.
Let her be sly.
And let her be ugly.
I loved the first book And I Darken! I read back in 2016 and then when the second one came out last year I bought and then just never got around to it.
Then I figured I might as well just wait until the last one comes out and read the whole series, start to finish in one go!
So that’s exactly what I plan to do next year!
│The Raven Cycle│Maggie Stiefvater│
“Where did you say you found that bird again?”
“In my head.” Ronan’s laugh was a sharp jackal cry.
“Dangerous place,” commented Noah.
Ronan stumbled, all his edges blunted by alcohol, and the raven in his hands let out a feeble sound more percussive than vocal. He replied, “Not for a chain saw.”
I read the first book The Raven Boys last year and OMG guys I fell so deeply in love with it that I just knew I would love the entire series and since it was so close to Christmas I put them on my wishlist and mum bought the entire series for me!
And have I touched them since??? Absolutely not but I plan on reading them soon.
Early next year for sure!!!!
│Montague Siblings│Mackenzi Lee│
“Just thinking about all that blood.” I nearly shudder. “Doesn’t it make you a bit squeamish?”
“Ladies haven’t the luxury of being squeamish about blood,” she replies, and Percy and I go fantastically red in unison.”
I read the first book, the Gentleman’s Guide earlier this year in a major book slump and wanted to die a little inside!
I thoroughly enjoyed it but I knew I would have liked it a lot more if I hadn’t read it in the worst slump of my life.
So when I found out we were getting a second book from Felicity’s point of view I knew I desperately needed it and it gave me an excuse to reread the first book slump free!
I actually just bought the Lady’s Guide last month so fingers crossed I actually get to it soon!
“You know what I learned in all these months? That I built my whole fucking life around you. My entire adult life. Five years. I’m totally lost on my own. You know how terrifying it is, to be that dependent on someone?”
I am officially breaking the rules instead of just bending them with this one!
These are two separate books that aren’t in a series but are by the same author!
I read Elliot Wake’s first two books, Unteachable and Black Iris, in 2017 and loved them both so much that I went and bought his next two books immediately!
And then never picked them up.
I hate myself a lot for this one because Elliot Wake’s writing is bloody brilliant and I love it so much and I really need to pick up his last two books!
│City of Ghosts│Cassidy Blake│Victoria Schwab│
People think that ghosts only come out at night, or on Halloween, when the world is dark and the walls are thin. But the truth is, ghosts are everywhere.
I am trash for anything Victoria Schwab puts out.
That’s it. That’s all I have to say for this one.
│The Hate U Give│Angie Thomas│
You can destroy wood and brick, but you can’t destroy a movement.
I got this for Christmas last year out of spite for it being banned in a school in the US because I’m petty af and every month that goes by that I have not read it I feel more and more guilty FOR STILL NOT HAVING READ IT!
But now there’s a movie so I’m gonna go see that when it comes out in Aus and then read the book!
│Children of Blood and Bone│Tomi Adeyemi│
“I won’t let your ignorance silence my pain”
I bought into the hype and so far from reviews, it totally seems worth it but I just need to get my fucking ass in gear and pick it up!
│The Cruel Prince│Holly Black│
If I cannot be better than them, I will become so much worse.
I bought into the hype yet again and I think it might have been worth it???
Jury is still out for me on this one but I do want to get to it soon!
│Harry Potter│J.K. Rowling│
“It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends.”
I bought this series second hand this year for my birthday (January) because I wanted to read the whole series again since I didn’t actually finish it the first time.
Listen, baby Grey was not very good at getting through long series.
Is adult Grey any better? Debatable but she’ll damn well give it a go!
│Basically all of Rick Riordan’s Books│
The real world is where the monsters are.
I have so many of this man’s books that I have just collected secondhand whenever I seem them for really cheap and have I read a single one???
I have nearly all of them!!!!
Sometimes my book buying habits make me hate myself and this is one of those instances where I feel especially so.
I did it! But did I really do it if I broke the rules so much?
The answer is still yes.
What books are on your backlist?
Have you read any of these?
