New post series!
From now on I’ll be covering the month past in my new series, Month in Review. It’ll have more than just the books I read for the month!
You’ll get what I watched, what I listened to and all sorts of good stuff! Starting next month I’ll also be including my Shout Out Sunday stuff as well.
This month though Month in Review and Shout Out Sunday were both too long to put together so you get them all separate!
My TBR posts are also changing and will now be Month Ahead, in those you’ll also get what I’m looking forward to and what I plan on posting for that month.
I’ve been gone for nearly four whole months which means there is a lot to catch up on! If you’re wondering why I was gone so long, you can read up on my update here.
So what did I consume while I was away??? Well, loads of things!
What I Read
1.│Moxie│Jennifer Mathieu│✅│📚│★★★★☆│RTC│Read Jul 1│🧠🚺│
Good feminist YA lit! Wish I had read it before The Nowhere Girls though as it wasn’t quite as good.
2.│We Are Young│Cat Clarke│✅│📚│★★★★☆│RTC│Read Jul 2│🏳️🌈🔆🧠│
I enjoyed this one more than the first Clarke book I read, Girlhood. Somehow she does a great job of writing YA books that are a good balance of light and dark???

Cute fangirls and fun pop culture references! A fun, light and diverse read!

Gay anthology! Fave anthology! My favourite story was Every Shade of Red by Elliot Wake!
8.│Little Monsters│Kara Thomas│✅│📚│★★★★☆│RTC│Read Jul 20│🔆🧠│
This book had ghosts and trust issues and an unreliable narrator??? Great idea, the execution could have been better.
9.│Beautiful Music for Ugly Children│Kristin Cronn-Mills│✅│📚│★★★★☆│RTC│Read Jul 22│🏳️🌈│
A story of a trans boy who wants to share his love of music through radio. Can’t speak with any authority on the rep but I didn’t see anything glaringly wrong with it.

│August│Read: 16│Average Rating: 4★’s│Diversity: 13/16│
In August I read a new favourite, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo! It made its way to my top favourite stand-alone books which is a list that is getting longer by the month!
I also read so many graphic novels because after reading loads of novels in a day or two each in July I needed a break with some lighter reading!
1.│No Mercy Vol 1│No Mercy│Alex de Campi│✅│📚│★☆☆☆☆│Read Sep 6│🔆│
2.│I Hate Fairyland Vol 2│I Hate Fairyland│Skottie Young│✅│📚│★★★★☆│Read Sep 6│

7.│Raw. Vegan. Not Gross.│Laura Miller│✅│📚│★★★★☆│Read Sep 27│
I’ve gone on a bit of a binge, borrowing loads of cookbooks from the library and scanning the recipes I want to make. This was the only one I fully read. I’ve been vegetarian, almost vegan, before and would honestly like to be vegan one day but unfortunately it’s a lifestyle that’s very expensive and unsustainable for me right now. That doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy a vegan recipe every now and then.
8.│Fresh Romance Vol 1│Fresh Romance│Sarah Kuhn│✅│📚│★★★☆☆│Read Sep 28│🏳️🌈🔆│
9.│Delilah Dirk Vol 2│Delilah Dirk│Tony Cliff│✅│📚│★★★★☆│Read Sep 29│🔆│
│September│Read: 9│Average Rating: 4★’s│Diversity: 7/9│
The graphic novels continued in September but I also read Girl Made of Stars and fuck that book hit me hard! Another new stand-alone favourite!
I had quite a large break from reading in the middle of the month because most of my free time was spent looking at houses and I thought I’d be moving house around that time. That didn’t happen and so then I had to read loads because all my library loans were due to be returned soon!
1.│I Hate Fairyland Vol 3│I Hate Fairyland│Skottie Young│✅│📚│★★★★★│Read Oct 3│
2.│Lumberjanes Bonus Tracks│Lumberjanes│Holly Black│✅│📚│★★★★★│Read Oct 3│🏳️🌈🔆│
3.│Bad Romance│Heather Demetrios│✅│📚│★★★★★│Read Oct 8│🧠│
A v. v. heavy book about how hard and hopeless it can feel when you’re stuck in abusive relationships (both romantic & paternal). This was such an emotional read and I lost count of how many times I cried.
│October│Read: 3│Average Rating: 5★’s│Diversity: 2/3│
I moved hose in early October and then was busy setting the new house up and getting ready for my blogging return so I didn’t really read much for most of October! Hopefully I’ll get to read a bit more this month!

What I Watched
Oh boy! I watched a lot! For the first two months of my hiatus, I just binge watched everything I could get my hands on.
1.│Red Dragon│🎥│2002│🎬 Brett Ratner│🌟 Anthony Hopkins, Edwards Norton, Ralph Fiennes│★★★★☆│
Thought While Watching: I have decided that Will Graham is 100% an empath it’s canon now.
I think I have a thing for tired, sad, smart boys who are either psychopaths or attract psychopaths. Who knew.
2.│To All The Boys I Loved Before│🎥│2018│🎬 Susan Johnson│🌟 Lana Condor, Noah Centineo│★★★★☆│
Fave Moment: Lara Jean rolling off the roof.
I loved this so much! Second fave rom-com behind Love, Simon! I bought the book!
3.│Daniel Sloss: Live Shows │Dark + Jigsaw│📺│2018│💭 Daniel Sloss│🌟 Daniel Sloss│★★★★★│
Fave Bit: The whole jigsaw analogy! + anytime he gets that shit head grin just before he drops the darkest punchlines
I was very excited to see that Daniel Sloss now has two comedy specials on Netflix! He’s one of my favourite comedians and although I had seen all the material in the specials already, I still thoroughly enjoyed watching them!
The Jigsaw special is one I recommend everyone watch! Seriously, his jigsaw analogy about relationships is exactly what I’ve been trying to say for years but could never articulate well enough.
Be warned, if you do watch it and you’re in a relationship, it might put it in jeopardy but if it does, then it’s probably for the best. You’re welcome.
When my mum and I sat down to watch it I said: “If you hadn’t of ended your marriage before, this would have fucking done it.”
Also he’s coming to Australia next year and MUM AND I ARE GOING I’M SO FUCKING EXCITED!!!!!
4.│The Spy Who Dumped Me│🎥│2018│🎬 Susanna Fogel│🌟 Mila Kunis, Kate McKinnon│★★★★☆│
Fave Moment: Literally every conversation between Morgan and her parents
5.│Hannah Gadsby: Nanette│📺│2018│💭 Hannah Gadsby│🌟 Hannah Gadsby│★★★★★│
Fave Bit: ALL OF THEM
Mum and I came across Hannah in the Please Like Me TV series and absolutely loved her and her character!
She’s just so intelligent and I love that she can make you laugh and cry in the same breath.
I learned so much in such a short amount of time watching her special and fell even more in love with her.
I highly recommend it if you haven’t seen it already! Everyone needs to watch it.
6.│The Shining│🎥│1980│🎬 Stanley Kubrick│🌟 Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Danny Lloyd│★☆☆☆☆│
Fave Trivia: Stephen King hates it
The only thing I didn’t hate about this was the kid. Everything else about it was off. At first I thought maybe it was the acting but now I 100% believe its the directing.
I feel like the reason so many people think it’s good is because it made them uncomfortable and it wasn’t even in the “this is challenging how I think“ kind of uncomfortable, more in the “this actually terribly executed and every wrong choice that could be made in making this was made“ kind of uncomfortable. I think people confused the two.
7.│Gerald’s Game│🎥│2017│🎬 Mike Flanagan│🌟 Carla Gugino, Bruce Greenwood│★★★★☆│
Fave Figment of Her Imagination: The hardass version of herself
This was sooooo good??? Like after the shit show of The Shining my expectations were low. But regardless it was a good fucking film.
Could be very triggering.
8.│The Tale│🎥│2018│🎬 Jennifer Fox│🌟 Elizabeth Debicki, Frances Conroy, Laura Dern│★★★★☆│
Fave Performance: Laura Dern
This made me realise I need to keep an eye out for Laura Dern because I realized that every time I’ve seen her in something her acting has been remarkable. This was pretty full on and could be very triggering so make sure you look up TW before you watch.
9.│Sharp Objects│📺│2018│💭 Marti Noxon│🌟 Amy Adams, Patricia Clarkson, Eliza Scanlen│★★★★★│
Fave Performance: Everyone??? Esp. Amy and Eliza
THIS WAS SO FUCKING GOOD I RUSHED OUT AND BOUGHT THE BOOK!!!
I love Amy Adams so much and she fucking brought everything to this role. It’s so creepy and fucked up and I need more shit like this in my life thanks.
It was also super fucking triggering so probably look up trigger warnings before you watch.
10.│Crazy Rich Asians│🎥│2018│🎬 Jon M. Chu│🌟 Constance Wu, Henry Golding│★★★★☆│
Fave Moment: Rachel and Peik Lin’s reaction to Nick’s Grandmother’s
11.│The Good Place│Season 3 Eps│📺│2016-│💭Michael Schur│🌟Kristen Bell, William Jackson Harper, Jameela Jamil│★★★★★│
Fave Idiot: Eleanor but I love them all.
Fave Moment: Chidi telling the barista he wants to start crying after being asked what muffin he wants. Because that’s me.
I’m a little gay for Kristen Bell.
12.│Gone Girl│🎥│2014│🎬 David Fincher│🌟 Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike, Neil Patrick Harris│★★★★☆│
Recurring Thought While Watching: WTF is she doing now????
Yeah, I know, I’m a bit late to this one but I got there eventually and what a wild fucking ride!
13.│The Mindy Project│Seasons 1-3│📺│2012-2017│💭 Mindy Kaling│🌟 Mindy Kaling, Ike Barinholtz, Ed Weeks│★★★★☆│
Fave Characters: Morgan + Peter
14.│Lucifer│Seasons 1-2│📺│2015-│💭 Tom Kapinos│🌟 Tom Ellis, Lauren German│★★★★☆│
Fave character: All of them??? I especially love Mazikeen, Linda & Ella!
I think if I met the devil, we would probably be friends. And then I would introduce him to my nana just to see what happens.
15.│Buzzfeed Unsolved│💻│2016-│🌟Ryan Bergara, Shane Madej, Brent Bennett│★★★★★│
Fave Moment: Basically anytime Ryan and Shane are bickering.
I have been binging this hard! It’s just so good!
Fave Video: All of them
I binge watched this channel for like 8 hours one day. I have zero regrets.
I think that’s it??? That’s all I can remember to be honest!
What I Listened To
I haven’t actually been listening to that much music recently! I’ve been listening to podcasts more than anything but I’ll get to that in a bit.
1.│My Favorite Murder│🎙 Karen Kilgariff, Georgia Hardstark│★★★★★│
Fave Quotes: “Here’s the thing: fuck everyone.”, “Nothing is real; speak for yourself, question authority.”, “Don’t worry, it gets worse.”
Fave Episode: All of them??? There are too many to choose! But the last episode had a proposal at a live show which was adorable!
As always I’m listening to My Favorite Murder every week!
And thanks to them I found the Facebook Group History Loving Murderinos! It’s a fun group where Murderinos can go and talk about their love of history as well.
Thanks to that group I also found two new podcasts I now absolutely love.
2.│Unsung Sluts│🎙 Stacie Rasmussen, Tabitha Davis│★★★★★│
Fave Quote: “If you can’t beat them, lead them.”
Fave Episode: Episode 11 – Royalty
One of the members of the above FB group and a friend started their own podcast about history called Unsung Sluts and I love it!
They’re still new so they only have a few episodes but I now listen every week and look forward to each one.
I just listened to the royalty episode and I loved Tabitha’s take on the Countess of Bathory!
3.│History is Gay│🎙 Gretchen Ellis, Leigh Pfeffer│★★★★★│
Fave episode: Episode 8: Nazi Punks F**k Off, Pt 1: Magnus Hirschfeld & Episode 17: He’s a Real Wilde One (Oscar Wilde)
I also discovered History is Gay which is a great podcast putting the LGBTQIAP+ back into their past because history is a lot gayer than we’re told!
I’ve discovered so many new figures to base future Ancient Archive posts on and I can’t wait to share them with you!
I had just finished listening to the Oscar Wilde episode when I decided to go back and edit all my old posts to match my new theme and design, it’s quite a big job and whilst doing it I sometimes hate myself a little so I asking myself “What would Oscar Wilde do?“ And you know that bitch is all about the aesthetic.
4.│Unexpected Fluids│🎙 Riyadh Khalaf, Alix Fox│★★★★★│
Fave Episode: E10: Sloppy Seconds with Shane Jenek (Courtney Act)
I also have been listening to Unexpected Fluids which is a very funny podcast hosted by a Sexpert and Youtuber covering all the embarrassing and weird sex stories people have. They have guests on every episode I believe and it’s always very funny and informative!
This is great to listen to when I am blogging because I don’t need to focus 100% to follow a story but can still get a good laugh while working.
What I Did
I feel like I didn’t do anything July or August but I did loads in September and October!
In September I was busy working extra shifts and looking for a new house with my mum! As I said in my update, my mum and step-dad are officially getting a divorce and honestly, it’s been a long time coming. So, once my step-dad left, my mum and I knew we would need to find a smaller house for us.
I feel like we looked at hundreds of houses but it was probably more like twenty.
September felt like torture. My mum and I don’t do well living through in between phases! We packed up half the house in only a few hours in the start of September, we were that ready to leave!
By the time we finally got a house we were ready to pull our hair out.
Finally we found a house at the end of September, it ticked all our boxes but funnily enough, neither of us could remember it! We looked at the photos and couldn’t conjure up the memory of seeing it in person. Slowly but surely our memories did kick in and we remembered how nice and perfect it was for us and we were very excited to be moving!
There was many an angry rant about my step-dad for doing basically nothing, leaving moving his shit out till the last minute and still managing to drag it out as long as possible???
He didn’t even pack his stuff, we did and he didn’t do anything to get the house ready to be handed over either. Safe to say that his
inactions cemented that my mum did the right thing in ending the marriage.
I also got a lot of new things with the extra money from working more.
I got a whole new desktop computer! I love it so fucking much! I spent ages trying to figure out if I wanted a new laptop or a desktop since my old laptop is on its last legs. I realized that I don’t really use my laptop anywhere other than at my desk now so why not get a desktop?
It makes me feel very professional and I have to remind myself that it’s an investment in my future whenever I think about how much it cost.
I also bought some new furniture, including a new desk since my old one was a small square desk that was just too small for the new desktop. I now have my desk out in the living area instead of in my room since I no longer hide away in there now that it’s just mum and me.
I upgraded to a smaller, lighter tablet. and got rid of my Kindle as I wasn’t using it much and I can still access all my Kindle books and ARCs on my tablet. My old tablet was really heavy so it was getting too painful to hold for long periods of time so I’m thankful for the upgrade.
My Little Shithead AKA My Cat
My cat Charlie was a bit antsy during the time it took to find a house and pack up but he’s been very happy not having the person who hated him around anymore.
Funny story: Our old house’s backyard was netted off so Charlie couldn’t get out. This was great for my anxiety as I didn’t have to worry where he was, however it wasn’t very good for his health and he put on a lot of weight.
The new house is not netted off but I was worried that when I let him out the first time that he would go missing for weeks like he did the first time I moved house with him.
My way of combating this was to take him for a walk around the neighbourhood with me before letting him out on his own.
Well, he did not like the leash. He basically would just flop onto the ground whenever I tried to get him to walk forward so I had to bite the bullet and let him out on his own.
I don’t think he even left the backyard. When I let him out throughout the day he’ll just roll on the cement or in the dirt or just stare at the garden wall or fence and then come inside.
I have a feeling he might think he’s still locked in.
We’ve also got a main road running right behind us and Charlie doesn’t like loud noises so if he does work out he can leave the backyard, I doubt he’ll head backwards because hes such an anxious cat. Hopefully he’ll just wonder our street which is one big loop.
Overall it’s been a very big few months for me and my mum. But we’re very happy with the new path our lives are taking. We’ve grown to love our new house in only a few short weeks and the whole atmosphere at home is better than it has been in years, at least for me but I think the same can be said for my mum too.
I love the new area we live in as well. It’s a bit more well-to-do than we’re used to so the grocery stores have a lot more to choose from and a lot of new health foods I’ve not seen before. Which makes my shopping even more overwhelming for me but I’m okay with it because the options are nice!
The only real time I spend in my room now is a couple of hours, at most, just before bed each night. This is a huge difference from the last few years, but especially the last year, where I basically spent any time not at work, in my room. I am super thankful for such huge changes in my life and I’m really looking forward to what is to come!
I Left The House
I went to the Lucky Dumpling Market and Moon Lantern Festival which are part of the Oz Asia Festival in Adelaide at the end of the month!
My mum and step-dad
mum’s ex-husband??? ex-step-dad??? What do I call him now??? and I went to the Lucky Dumpling Market a couple of years ago because I was trying to make myself try new things and get out of the house more.
Nothing has changed ahah. But I knew I really wanted to go again this year!
I’m learning that I really love Asian food quite a lot and I seem to like Thai and Vietnamese the most.
While at the market mum and I ordered two meals each to try, the first one we both ate while waiting for the second one because it was so busy! Neither of our first picks was all that great. I got butter chicken dumplings (I’ve always really loved Indian food) but the description was kind of misleading and it turned out to be ordinary fried dumplings with butter chicken sauce on top. Mum got Laksa dumplings which she found also underwhelming.
Our second meals though? Amazing! 20/10 would eat again. Actually will be eating again because we’re going back another night!
I got a Korean Fried Chicken Bao and a Crispy Pork Belly Bao and OMG they were so delicious! I’m a slut for pork crackling to be honest so that is something I usually gravitate toward whenever there is an option.
And the Korean Fried Chicken was quite spicy for me (ya girl is v. v. white, I can handle more spice than the average white person but not by much!). I think it wouldn’t have affected me so much if my lips weren’t so fucking cracked from being sick because my lips were BURNING so it was painful but the actual taste of spice was fine. The dough was so light and fluffy and soft. I’m making myself hungry just thinking about it!
Mum got this dish which is very hard to explain. I don’t know if it’s a normal dish in Japan or if it was a fusion type thing??? They’re called Teppanyaki Noodles. It was Hokkien noodles with like an egg and meat and cheese and then all these sauces and vegetables and it was so delicious!
While I was waiting for my Bao, the stall selling them was also doing these crazy over the top churros and they’re basically the reason we’re going back because they looked so good! They have Ferrero Rocher ones that mum wants to get and I’m going to get the matcha ones. And then I’ll probably get the Teppanyaki Noodles to take home.
Can you tell we are big lovers of food?
It was very busy because we went the same night as the Moon Lantern Festival and so I got a bit overwhelmed when I was walking through the crowd a few times but I actually handled it very well! Hopefully, it won’t be so busy next time.
That was a lot!
I’m so glad to be back and I hope y’all are happy to have me back! I look forward to this month and working on making this blog the best it can be!
What have you been up to these last few months?
What have been reading, watching and listening to?? I want to know!
Have you tried walking a cat before?
