Down the TBR Hole 1.2 // Banging Book Club – Reading Through a Feminist Lens

Down the TBR Hole - Explination

We’re back again for the Down the TBR Hole meme! This time I’m tackling my Banging Book Club Shelves!

What are my Banging Book Club shelves?

Well firstly, I’m an avid listener of the Banging Book Club podcast hosted by Hannah Witton, Leena Norms & Lucy Moon! It’s a book club essentially for books about sex and gender read through a feminist lens.

When it first started I never got around to reading any of the books but listened to all of the episodes. Last year I tried to tag along with the books I was interested in and reading the ones from the year before that I wanted to check out. I still never got around to reading all the ones I wanted to and this year I’ve not been awful at keeping up, once again.

I’ve had the books split into different shelves by year since I decided to read the ones that interest me.

I thought I’d use this week’s Down the TBR Hole to revisit the books I marked as to read and whether I think I’ll actually read them.

a little gay history.jpgA Little Gay History: Desire and Diversity Around the World│R.B. Parkinson│🏳️‍🌈│
I added this because… I love history. I love gay shit. Gay history???? Fucking yes!
Also, history is so much gayer than we’re told in school and I need to know about my queer predecessors.
Stay or Go? Stay! And it’s inspired me to add more queer history books to my TBR.
Because adding more books was totally the point of this post.

Perv: The Sexual Deviant in All of Us│Jesse Bering│
I added this because… The world of kinks and fetishes fascinate me and I try my best to keep from kink shaming.
I honestly really just enjoy learning about things that are outside of my understanding. I want to understand, I need to know.
Why?
Why?
Why?
I was that kid.
Stay or Go? Go! The reviews say it’s not that different from Bonk and that Bonk is better (which features further down this list).

Vagina: A New Biography│Naomi Wolf│
I added this because… I have a vagina. I should probably know far more about my vagina. Also, I love a good vagina related rant.
Stay or Go? Go! I don’t think I could read 400 pages about vaginas. No matter how much I love talking about them.

I added this because… I’m still yet to read a book that focuses on a trans character? I don’t know how I’ve gone so long without reading one. I have plenty on my TBR. I’ve just not actually picked one up yet.
Stay or Go? Stay!

Bonk: The Curious Coupling of Science and Sex│Mary Roach│
I added this because… You can never know enough about sex.
Stay or Go? Stay!

The Vagina Monologues│Eve Ensler & Gloria Steinem│
I added this because… Like I said, I like talking about vaginas and I love women talking about the things we’re told not to talk about.
Stay or Go? Stay! At under 200 pages, this vagina book is likely to be much easier to read.

the gender games.jpgThe Gender Games: The Problem with Men and Women, from Someone Who Has Been Both│Juno Dawson│🏳️‍🌈│
I added this because… I’m in the camp that believes that gender is a social construct.
I am also in the camp that knows it’s still very important to people and plays a huge role in how people identify.
Because of those two beliefs, I don’t think the lines of gender should be eradicated, I just think they could do with a little more blurring and they shouldn’t hold so much power over us.
Stay or Go? Stay! I’m super interested to read about gender from a trans person’s point of view!

Come as You Are: The Surprising New Science that Will Transform Your Sex Life│Emily Nagoski│
I added this because… Women sexuality!
Stay or Go? Go! Uhhhh, that 400-page count is might intimidating.

beauty queens.jpgBeauty Queens│Libba Bray│🏳️‍🌈🧠🔆│
I added this because… I love me a feminist novel! And this one has such great reviews!
Stay or Go? Stay!

Testosterone Rex: Myths of Sex, Science, and Society│Cordelia Fine│
I added this because… This book aims to dismantle the belief that there are major differences between ‘male’ and ‘female’ brains which sounds exactly like my kind of book.
Stay or Go? Stay! After listening to the episode for this book I knew I needed to read it.

The Power│Naomi Alderman│
I added this because… Super-Powered Women? Yes, please!
Stay or Go? Go! The reviews seem to be quite mixed and it sounds like it might struggle to hold my attention and I have enough problems with that, thank you very much.

Cloud & Lightning Separation

So I got rid of 4 out of 11 books and I have now just joined all the books onto one shelf!
