Tag // Emotions in Colours – I’m A Permanent Emotional Wreck

Prompted by the Top Ten Tuesday topic, Books with My Favourite Colour on the cover (or in the title), Cait @ Paper Fury created the Emotions in Colours tag!

So I’m here today to give it a crack!

Cloud Separation

BLUE → BOOK THAT MADE YOU SAD.

the raven king all for the game AFTG.jpgThe Raven King│All For the Game #2│Nora Sakavic

People talked about his trial and how it saved them from Andrew. No one said what they were doing to save Andrew from himself.

This book wrecked me! It broke me, it made me a fucking mess. Just all of the stuff with Andrew broke my fucking heart. I wanted to protect him and shield him from the world and had to sit there and watch as he had to deal with so much trauma. I just. Ugh. This book broke me.

My mum is currently reading this at the time of writing (19/5) and I asked where she was up to and it was the Drake scene. Our conversation went like this:

Mum: This book is full on.
Me: I did warn you.
Mum: Like, fuck.
Me: They’re all my children and I just want them to be protected.
Mum: They do become your children don’t they?
Mum: I just want to stay at home and keep reading.
Me: I know. Do you see why I read all three books in a couple of days?
Mum, pained: Yeeeessss

I wouldn’t be surprised if I came home from work and she was tucked on the couch reading instead of going to a 40th she’s meant to go to. But it is a dress up party and she’s going as Lila Bard so the chance of her going is pretty high, even just to interest people enough to read the Shades of Magic series.

RED → BOOKWORM PROBLEMS THAT MAKE YOU ANGRY.

I have a few in common with Cait!

Damaged book-mail – Listen, I ordered The Raven King (The Raven Cycle #4) from Book Depository and it arrived damaged. Contacted BD and they sent out another one, only to see it jammed into the letterbox and damaged again.

Bitch! I was mad. It was totally Australia Post’s fault but they wanted to blame BD for not putting it in better packaging but like…don’t shove shit in a tiny mailbox. Hide it behind the plant pot or the screen door, like the better mailmen do.

Denied for Arcs – Ugh. Listen, it is so hard to get accepted for arcs if you’re outside of the US or UK. It’s frustrating as all hell.

Stickers on books – Annoying. I hate it. Stop it.

My back – Okay, listen, reading hurts. It physically pains me, but so does literally everything, so I deal with it for the things I love.

Hype – I like hype as much as anyone, BUT sometimes it really annoys me when the hype lets me down and tricks me into wasting time on books that aren’t worth my energy. Y’all need to stop swooning over basic books, I swear to God.

Book Slumps – I hate them. They’re useless. Get rid of them.

YELLOW → UPCOMING BOOK YOU’D BE HAPPY TO HAVE RIIIIGHT NOW.

Basically, anything upcoming from Schwab because that woman can turn it out.

GREEN → FAVOURITE UNLIKELY FRIENDS.

Okay, I have three ensembles from four different series because why the fuck not, right??

the raven boys the raven cycle TRC six of crows soc the foxhole court all for the game AFTG a conjuring of light shades of magic SOM.jpg

│Blue, Gansey, Ronan, Adam, Noah│The Raven Cycle│Maggie Stiefvater

Instead of answering, he asked, “Do you want me to come?”
Something stuck in Gansey’s chest. “I would take all of you anywhere with me.”

Like they’re all so different??? And yet they get along really well???

│Kaz, Inej, Nina, Matthias, Jesper, WylanSix of Crows Duology│Leigh Bardugo

Kaz leaned back. “What’s the easiest way to steal a man’s wallet?”
“Knife to the throat?” asked Inej.
“Gun to the back?” said Jesper.
“Poison in his cup?” suggested Nina.
“You’re all horrible,” said Matthias.

Again, they’re all crazy different! To start, Matthias doesn’t want to be anywhere near them, he thinks Kaz is the Devil incarnate.

│Neil, Andrew, Aaron, Nicky, Kevin, Renee, Alison, Dan, Matt, Seth│All for the Game│Nora Sakavic

He’d come to the Foxhole court every inch a lie, but his friends made him into someone real.

They are all my children and nothing bad should ever happen to them, and yet, all the bad things happen to them and I just have a lot of feelings about this group okay???

│Specifically, the sea trip gang: Kell, Lila, Alucard, Holland, Jasta, LenosShades of Magic│V.E. Schwab

And then the door burst open.
Alucard stood in the doorway, soaking wet, as if he’d just been dumped in the sea, or the sea had been dumped over him. “Stop fucking with the ship.”

I nearly went this whole post without using this series once! Aren’t you proud? And then I went through the edits and remembered the whole gang on the ship, trying to save London and…it was just so perfect. Schwab knew exactly what she was doing when she selected who would go on that trip and it was brilliant.

GREY → BOOK YOU ARE TOTALLY EMOTIONLESSABOUT.

renegadesRenegades│Marissa Meyer

Hope called themselves the Renegades.

Hope? Hope! This book dashed all of my hopes. It could have been sooooooo goooooood. And yet…

I regret not DNF’ing this to be honest because it just wasted my time. The characters were blah, the plot was blah, the world was blah, the villains were the closest things to not blah.

Also just anything I DNF to be quite honest, usually I DNF because I just don’t care.

PINK → BOOK ENDING (NO SPOILERS THOUGH!) THAT YOU LOOOOVE.

our dark duet MOV allegiant divergent.jpg

Our Dark Duet│Monsters of Verity #2│Victoria Schwab

Books can’t hurt you unless you care about them.
That’s how they get in—through the cracks that caring makes in us.

This book broke me and yet, I was thankful for it. There really was only one true way to end this duology. I just wish it didn’t hurt so much.

Allegiant│Divergent #3│Veronica Roth

I suppose a fire that burns that bright is not meant to last.

I actually don’t remember much from this book because I read it a while ago, but I do remember really loving how it ended and my best friend being so mad about it.

She hates endings like that, like a lot of readers, whereas I love them, I live for them.

There’s no better ending than one that is the most realistic and breaks your heart at the same time. I might be a masochist…

PURPLE → BOOK YOU NEVER REALLY UNDERSTOOD??

monstress.jpg acotar a court of thorns and roses

Monstress, Vol 1│Monstress│Marjorie M. Liu

There’s more hunger in the world than love.

I really just had no idea what the fuck was going on, and then it ended and I was just as confused as when I began.

Okay, so these are less that I didn’t understand the books themselves and more that I don’t understand what people see in them???

A Court of Thorns and Roses│ACOTAR #1│Sarah J. Maas

“…We’re too powerful, and too bored with immortality, to be checked by anything else.”

I just didn’t like it. I didn’t buy into the Feyre/Tamlin romance for a second, there were red flags all over the place. Feyre was dumb and annoying. I didn’t get the hype. I still don’t.

However, I looooved ACOMAF. I see ACOTAR as a really shitty stepping stone to the wonder of ACOMAF. That’s it.

Really any classics in general – They’re all just so boring!!! I’m so glad I was never made to read any in high school because I would have failed and getting anything less than a B in English would have wrecked me because that was my shit.

Icon Separation

WHITE → AUTHOR YOU’RE SCARED OF (THEY’RE SO MEAN TO THEIR CHARACTERS!)

Victoria Schwab

I love her. But I don’t trust her. She’s proven she isn’t afraid to kill her darlings and once you do that, there’s no telling what else you’re capable of and that’s terrifying. It’s also a great marker for authors I will love so…

Icon Separation

BLACK → BOOK YOU THINK IS POWERFUL AND INFLUENTIAL.

am i normal yet the spinster club TSC.jpg doing it hannah witton.jpg all the rage asking for it.jpg

The Spinster’s Club│Holly Bourne

“Maybe all you needed in life was the belief you could change things. Somehow. Some way.”

For me, these books are so important. I wish I had this feminist trilogy when I was a teenager. Maybe I wouldn’t have been such an asshole and would have learned how important feminism was so much earlier.

I honestly want to create a family library for all my cousins one day, and this series would be at the top of the list. Along with the next book I mention.

I talked one of my cousins into reading them and she told me she had never read a book so fast. I was very proud. I’m sure her dad now hates me, giving her even more fuel to go off about injustice.

Doing It!│Hannah Witton

Talk about what you need out of the relationship, what you want, what you expect, what you can give. Talk about boundaries and rules. Talk about jealousy.

The best thing a person can take away from this book is the importance of communication, and Hannah reinforces it every step of the way.

Honestly, everyone can get a benefit from reading this book, I’d thrust it onto everyone if I could. I even sneakily recommended it to my cousin even though my aunt doesn’t want her reading anything that has sex involved. I know. I know.

I probably shouldn’t have but I also don’t have my head stuck in the clouds like my aunt does. I heard a lot worse from my mates in class at my cousin’s age, and positive sex education is better than none.

All the Rage│Courtney Summers

You know all the ways you can kill a girl?
God, there are so many.

Asking for It│Louise O’Neil

They are all innocent until proven guilty. But not me. I am a liar until I am proven honest.

Both of these books unflinchingly put rape culture under the microscope and ask why the fuck our society places so much blame on victims of sexual assault when we shouldn’t be blaming them at all.

In fact, we should be blaming the perpetrators and society for letting them think it was okay in the first place and letting them get away with it. I know. Wild!

Both of these books were painful to read, and that’s why they were brilliant.

ORANGE → PLAYFUL CHARACTERS WHO ARE JUST TOO ADORABLE.

aristotle and dante discover the secrets of the universe the gentlemans guide to vice and virtue

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe│Benjamin Alire Sáenz

“I guess I’m going to tell my dad. I have this little speech. It starts something like this. Dad, I have something to say. I like boys. Don’t hate me. Please don’t hate me, don’t hate me don’t hate me.”

Aristotle and Dante are both so pure, and adorable and I just want them to be happy.

The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue│Montague Siblings #1│Mackenzi Lee

“Dear God, Felicity Montague, are you sewing yourself shut?”
Felicity looks up, innocent as a schoolgirl. She’s got the bloody cravat unwrapped from her arm, sleeve pushed up, and that wicked needle buried in her own arm around the gash left by the splinter—already sewn half shut while Percy and I were distracted. “What? It needs to be done and neither of you knows how.” She dips the needle out and pulls tight so that the ripped edges of her skin meet. I slump backward against the cannon to keep from keeling over in earnest. “See if you can find Henry a couch before he’s overcome,” she says to Percy, though he’s looking nearly as horrified.
After two more neat stitches, she knots off the thread and cuts it with her teeth, then gives her embroidery an examination, looking pleased as Punch. “I’ve never actually done that on a person before.” She glances up at us—Percy looking very obviously away and me swooning against the artillery.
And rolls her eyes. “Men are such babies.”

Monty, Percy and Felicity are just so soft, and precious. Again, I just want them to be happy.
