This week Top 5 Tuesday is talking about opening lines in books!
Now, I don’t know about anyone else but I knew my first pick immediately!
Opening lines can be tricky. The best ones grab you immediately and prepare you for the journey ahead.
They set up the whole book! They’re super important! That is a huge responsibility for a couple of sentences.
I want to jump right in, so get ready for some of the best opening lines you’ve ever read because I obviously have impeccable taste.
│This Savage Song│Victoria Schwab│★★★★★│
The night Kate Harker decided to burn down the school chapel, she wasn’t angry or drunk. She was desperate.
This is my favourite opening of all time!
If that doesn’t get you hooked, I don’t know what will!
There are some people you know you shouldn’t anger because it isn’t right. Like you mom—if she’s the nice sort.
There are other people you know you shouldn’t anger because they have the authority to punish you. Police officers, politicians, insane asylum wardens, your mom—if she’s the bad sort.
But there are some people you shouldn’t anger that you don’t know about, because no one ever survived to warn you.
I’m the third kind.
I mean…That’s when you are in for a good time.
Granted, this isn’t a favourite book, it was a fun read!
│The Rook│Daniel O’Malley│★★★★★│
The body you are wearing used to be mine.
I haven’t talked about The Rook on my blog before but I do really love it!
I read it before my reviewing days, so I often forget about it, but it is really a very good book!
The first line had me hooked immediately!
I only wish I had enjoyed the second book just as much…
│The Raven Boys│Maggie Stiefvater│★★★★☆│
Blue Sargent had forgotten how many times she’d been told that she would kill her true love.
I love this book so much!
This book made me realize that magical realism is right up my fucking alley!
I’m super excited to finish the series, hopefully soon!
│The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue│Mackenzie Lee│★★★★★│
On the morning we are to leave for our Grand Tour of the Continent, I wake in bed beside Percy. For a disorienting moment, it’s unclear whether we’ve slept together or simply slept together.
I wish I hadn’t wasted my first reading experience of this book on my slump of all slumps!
Because if it wasn’t for that I know I would have enjoyed it so much more!
Book regrets are the worst, I tell ya!
That’s my top 5 opening lines!
I look forward to possibly revisiting this in the future when I have read more books and seeing if many have been bumped out!
What are your favourite opening lines?
Do you have any book regrets?
