Bookish Bits // Owned TBR – It’s Official. I am a Book Dragon

I have too many books! I need to be stopped! Help me!

Hiya! A few weeks ago on a Shoutout Sunday post I talked about Emma @ Emma Reads Too Much and Destiny @ Howling Libraries posts where they shared their owned TBR’s. I thought it was a brilliant way to keep themselves accountable and encourage them to work through their massive piles of unread books! So here I am, doing the same thing!

My shelves were pretty bare only a couple of years ago. And by bare, I mean, basically non-existent.

As a teenager I had the stock standard YA collection consisting of the Hunger Games and Divergent trilogies, I had the Twilight series (I started hiding those in the garage so I didn’t have to be reminded of my bad taste in books once upon a time), I had all my John Green books and Thirteen Reasons Why as well as some romance novels and an assortment of other random books I had collected over the years.

I’ve always been a big library user, and I still am. But now that I’m older, I want nothing more than my own personal library. One day I want a room dedicated to my books and reading alone.

After years of half-assed readingif anyI began reading the Mortal Instruments series in 2016 and rediscovered my one true love! Since then I have been reading more than I ever have.

I discovered the online book community and have made several friends along the way.

During this time I purged my shelves of any books I knew I would never read or reread. Most of my collection was donated to a local thrift store. This left my shelves super fucking empty!

I worked out what my tastes are, what to avoid and what I gravitate toward. I usually avoid romance, and I spend most of my time in YA still, leaning more into Fantasy than anything else.

Cloud Separation

I’ve since accumulated loads of books in a rather short time, compared to my previous book buying history! I had to buy new Billy Bookcases for my expanding collection. Before last year I wouldn’t have had enough books to fill even half of one. Now I’ve filled almost two! I feel so very lucky that I’ve been able to get a hold of so many books the last two years. I credit a lot of this to my mum helping me add to my collection through Christmas and birthday gifts, as well as knowing where to look for the cheapest prices on the books I want.

I also want to mention that I have prerequisites for purchasing books. I’ve put these guidelines for myself in place because I hate wasting money, and nothing bothers me more when it comes to books than spending money on one and not liking it.
I can buy a book if it is one of the following;

☁️ I have already read it, loved it, and am likely to read again (Basically the only ones that feature on this list are rereads, Vicious, The Conqueror’s Saga, Six of Crows duology)

☁️ It’s written by one of my auto-buy authors (Victoria Schwab, Leigh Bardugo, Elliot Wake)

☁️ It’s from a series I have already started and love so far (ACOTAR, TRC, anything from the Shadowhunters world)

☁️ It was very, very cheap and it sounds like something I would really enjoy. Usually, this means secondhand. (Illuminae, Legend, basically all of Rick Riordan’s books)

☁️ They were childhood favourites that I want to read again and/or am wanting to collect for when my nephews are old enough to read them (Again, Rick Riordan books, Harry Potter)

☁️ It’s a super hyped book that I expect to really enjoy (Simon Vs, Leah on the Offbeat, The Cruel Prince, The Hate U give, Children of Blood and Bone)

☁️ It’s a kindle book and it’s a daily deal or it’s under $5 (Literally all of my kindle books)

Lightning Separation

Below is my Owned TBR!

I’ll be splitting it into a few sections for my own reference on how I acquired each book as well as roughly when I got them;

☁️ ARCs –  This is for any advanced reader copies I currently have on my TBR, as well as those that I acquire later on I don’t expect to add too many as I’m learning arc’s aren’t the best option for me.

☁️ Giveaways – I’m also including the books I have received via Goodreads giveaways in this section. Probably am not going to get anymore of these since the Goodreads Giveaway changes 😭

☁️ Kindle Ebooks – I’m pretty good for not going crazy when it comes to Kindle buying. Though there are some that have been there for months that I really want to read…

☁️ Gifts – This is just where I list all the books my mum and step dad has got me for my birthday and Christmas because my mum knows her daughter well And by knows me well, I mean knows to ask me to send her my wishlist around October and then allows me to double check that she’s bought the correct ones If I didn’t do this she would just purchase the first however many she sees, completely disregarding that some are parts of series and so I end up with books #2 and #4 in a series, adding more if I still have some gift money left, and completely ruining the surprise of what she got me…And then wrap it in clear cellophane because she’s so extra. I love her.

☁️ Secondhand – These are the books I’ve purchased secondhand, usually through an app called Gumtree which is an app where people can sell stuff they want to get rid of. Or I buy them through the facebook Marketplace. This is usually how I purchase whole series that are a bit older and are/were super popular to save some extra money.

☁️ Department Store – We have like 5?? Department store chains in Australia. There’s the two high end ones and then there’s the one for average working class folks like me. Those are Target, Big W and Kmart. Kmart is basically Aussie’s version of America’s Target. Our Target is more in between the high end department stores and the lower end. Big W is in between Target and Kmart.

I shop mostly at Big W for books because they have a great book section, usually stock the biggest hyped new releases, as well as the most popular older books. They’re cheaper than book stores, sometimes cheaper than Book Depository and I don’t have to wait for shipping. I normally check Big W once a week, especially if there’s a new release I really want to get my hands on ASAP. Guys I know I should try and support my local bookstores but 1. There isn’t very many in Adelaide anymore, especially not independent stores. 2. They’re so fucking expensive. If I bought my books exclusively from bookstores I would only get to buy a book a couple of times a year.

☁️ Book Depository – The day my sister told me about this website was the day my life changed, honestly. If I can’t get the book I want from Big W or secondhand than this is where I go. Free shipping! So many books! So cheap! This is also where my mum purchases books for me for my birthday and Christmas.

☁️ Book Store – Like I said earlier, I don’t shop at bookstores anymore, I used to when I was younger and they were the best place to shop for books but that was some time ago and I’ve mostly read all the books I purchased from bookstores already.

I’ll also be using a key so you can see what age range, genre, whether it’s a stand-alone or part of a series and what my current reading status is for each book.

*I read the first book a couple of years ago and never got around to finishing the second! I’m waiting until the show is finished now when I’ll feel empty so that I can extend my time with the series for a little longer. Plus, maybe that will be enough time for George R.R. Martin to finish the series because I don’t wanna have to reread the whole series again when the last book comes out just so I can remember everything that has happened…So I might just wait until then anyway. I don’t know. We’ll see.

This list took me ages! Phew.
Making this list has only cemented the fact I need to get on top of my owned TBR! Time to get my ass in gear! I don’t even know where the start! 🙈

What do you have on your TBR that you’re keen to get to?
Have you got any of the same books as me, waiting to be read?
What do you think I should start with next?

  1. Ok. I love this, like a lot. Also I laughed so much when I opened this up and saw you mention Destiny as whenever I think of Book Dragon I immediately think of her :’) ❤

I really love hearing you share your prerequisites for buying books – we’re so similar! I don’t have a lot of money so most of my books are either cheap second-hand books, kindle sale, gifts, super rare full price buys (for example, most anticipated reads), or buying books I’ve read from the library or have an eARC of but want to own a copy of because I love it so much! Because I’m so stingy I’ve managed to keep my book hoard to quite a reasonable level but the time is coming to purchase a new bookshelf anyway xD

Also, I LOVELOVELOVE your layout for this. After seeing Destiny’s post, I also made an owned TBR list too (https://redrocketpanda.wordpress.com/2018/02/09/the-unread-shelf-project-2018/) but yours is SO beautifully laid out. Mine just looks like a word dump so I might have to copy you and make it all pretty like yours ;D

    1. Yay! I’m not alone in my little book rules ahah 💖

Thank you so much! It took me ages so I’m glad it paid off 😂

Yours so does not look like a word dump! It looks really nice too…but if you want to copy mine, I’d be honoured ☺️

Thank you so much for the comment! I really appreciate it 💖

  2. Ahh I love reading these lists, yours is so much more organised than mine! I didn’t even think to organise by stores, that makes so much more sense! You have so many great books on your list, I hope you enjoy them all!
