Mini-Review // Miss Mayhem & Lady Renegades – Femme Rebel Saves the World

This week I am tackling the last two books in the Rebel Belle trilogy.

I really enjoyed Rebel Belle, it was a fun and light reprieve after starting my year with a not so great read.

So I was very much looking forward to the next books in the series. I posted my review for Rebel Belle on Saturday so please do check it out.

Title: Miss Mayhem
Author: Rachel Hawkins
Publisher: Putnam Juvenile
Age: YA
Genre: Fantasy, Romance
Released: April 7th, 2015
Trigger Warnings: Violence, Death

Synopsis*: Life is almost back to normal for Harper Price. The Ephors have been silent after their deadly attack at Cotillion months ago, and her best friend, Bee, has returned after a mysterious disappearance. Now Harper can focus on the important things in life: school, canoodling with David (her nemesis-turned-ward-slash-boyfie), and even competing in the Miss Pine Grove pageant.
Unfortunately, supernatural chores are never done. The Ephors have decided they’d rather train David than kill him. The catch: Harper has to come along for the ride, but she can’t stay David’s Paladin unless she undergoes an ancient trial that will either kill her . . . or make her more powerful than ever.

“Honestly, not enough people know how to use good manners as a weapon.”

I went into Miss Mayhem with high expectations, I thought it was safe to expect that I would enjoy it as much as the first but it never quite got there for me.

It wasn’t as funny and although the stakes were high again, they didn’t feel it. I never wondered if Harper would get through the trials, I was never made to feel like it was really all that much of a risk.

I don’t know, I just didn’t really enjoy Miss Mayhem as much as I’d like but it was still okay.

“I’ve lobotomized her. I’ve lobotomized my girlfriend with a— an effing potion.”

Title: Lady Renegades
Author: Rachel Hawkins
Publisher: Putnam Juvenile
Age: YA
Genre: Fantasy, Romance
Released: April 5th, 2016
Trigger Warnings: Violence, Death

Synopsis*: Just as Harper Price starts coming to terms with her role as David Stark’s battle-ready Paladin, protector, and girlfriend—her world goes crazy all over again.
Overwhelmed by his Oracle powers, David flees Pine Grove and starts turning teenage girls into Paladins—and these young ladies seem to think that Harper is the enemy David needs protecting from.  Ordinarily, Harper would be able to fight off any Paladin who comes her way, but her powers have been dwindling since David left town…which means her life is on the line yet again.
New York Times bestselling author Rachel Hawkins brings the fun once again in the finale of this pitch-perfect romantic paranormal comedy series.

It always hurt these days and had for a long time now, long enough that David couldn’t tell whether it was getting worse or whether he’d just been hurting for so long that it was starting to become unbearable.

Hawkins redeemed herself with Lady Renegades for me. The stakes felt well and truly high, I genuinely felt like there was a risk that Harper would lose David forever.

The humour was on point, it was perhaps even funnier than the first book. And I really loved getting David’s POV in this last book.

Look, I am always a fan of two people who hate each other having to go on a road trip together. I love when authors take two characters that butt heads and then throw them in a car or on a ship or plane together and make them have to work with each other. With Harper and Blythe, it really worked!

Lady Renegades had a great conclusion, everything wasn’t wrapped up in a pretty bow but it wasn’t bleak and devastating either. It was a solid end to an enjoyable series.

“Nineteen forty-three,” she said, arms folded across her chest. When I’d called, she’d been asleep, so she was wearing a pale green housecoat over peach silk pajamas. “That is the last time the police had to be called on a member of this family.”
“Aunt Jewel—” I started, but she just lifted a hand to cut me off.
“Now, Harper Jane, I am not upset that the police had to be called on you. The women in this family have always followed the rules too well for my taste.”
